Total Recall needed to get its ass to Mars. What a horrible remake.
I don't even know where to start with this... saw it last night. Has anyone else seen it yet?
First of all, you don't make a remake of a perfect classic that didn't need to be remade. I don't understand this latest trend of re-making movies from 20 years ago or more that were so good in their own right that they DON'T NEED TO BE REMADE! They were going to do a remake of Escape From New York a few years ago! I'm glad that idea got scrapped!! You just don't touch incredible originals like this. It's such a shame because Colin Farrell is actually a great actor but lands himself in movies like this. Without spoling it...
No Mars? WTF?
No memorable scenes or characters, like the original!
The screenwriters seemd to have become very lazy, as they went and combined characters into one. They didn't need to do that.
A plot line that makes you wonder how its even plausible, leaves you wondering, and after a certain point in the movie you wonder what the hell the value of the main character is when you find out a stupid little bait-and-switch plot twist. It totally de-values the main character and at that point it didn't matter if he died or not. You didn't have that in the original movie. In both movies, Quaid has something stored in his erased-memory that the antagonist Cohagen was trying to hide and keep from people. Quaid was trying to trace his memory to figure out what it is/was so that he could help out the resistance with it. I'm trying not to spoil this, but what you discover half way into the movie... makes Quaid a completely useless character, leaving you to wonder what the point was in the first place and why he would keep fighting. And why would Cohagen go through so much trouble if he knew all along...
I will admit the first quarter of the movie did start off good, intense action, heart pounding chases and great sci-fi. The main antagonist, Cohagen, I found was every bit as menacing as he should have been given the retarded plot that was changed around for this remake. Quaid's wife (or, ex-wife if you want to look at it that way) was VERY ruthless and menacing in this - however Kate Beckinsale does not measure up to Sharon Stone at all. Her character was one of those I mentioned that the screenwriters seemed to make a hybrid of a couple of characters from the original (there was no Richter in this one, and so they seemed to meld Richter and Quaid's wife together in this remake to try and create this ultra-ruthless agent). Jessica Biel's character was a little one-dimensional, and didn't hold a candle to the original character played by Rachel Ticotin.
As unbelievable as the original movie's story was about ice caps under martian soil that can be melted in a matter of seconds and provide oxygen, it was still better check-your-mind-at-the-door, popcorn summer fun than what they did in this remake about an overcrowded earth. The movie was also far too serious at times. I found that the original Total Recall melded a bit of comic relief into the movie that seemed to blend well, partially due to the great directing, and partially due to Arnold's personality and charisma.
I do think, however, that if this movie was released with a different name, changed the character names around, etc. then it would have been a great movie in its own right (despite certain things like plot holes, etc. that hurt the movie). I understand that I may be comparing too much to the original movie, and I understand completely the concept of trying to watch this movie for what it is, and to put the original out of your mind when going to see it (and I really tried to)... but it you just can't! Because they called it Total Recall, the main character's name is Douglas Quaid, the main antagonist's name is Cohagen, etc. you can't help but keep thinking back to the original! Make it it's own movie, make a sequel, or even hell, make a prequel - but don't re-make great classics that don't need re-making!
I think the idea behind this movie backfired, and all it did was end up making the original Total Recall and even better cult classic, because the first thing a lot of people are going to do now is go home and throw the original into the DVD player!Last edited by Atomini; 08-06-2012 at 09:48 AM.

it wasnt a remake. This one was made off of the book. It has nothing to do with the first one.

I think you're mistaken, Gix. I read the book, and the original movie followed the book far more closely than this one.
The book that the Total Recall movies are based off is called We Can Remember It For You Wholesale by Phillip K. Dick (my fav sci-fi writer of all time). Book plot summary:
Douglas Quail, a simple and ordinary man, wishes to visit Mars. Unable to afford it, he visits a company, REKAL (pronounced "recall") Incorporated, that offers implanted memories ("extra-factual memory"). The attempt to implant some exciting Mars memories into Quail reveals that he "might be" an undercover government assassin with a mind full of dangerous secrets. The REKAL staff quickly get Quail out of their office; he heads home and finds certain physical evidence to support his new old memories. His handlers initially seek his death but instead Quail, being an assassin, avoids this and goes on the run. Unfortunately, he has an implanted device which can be used to read his thoughts. He therefore makes a deal in which the memory of his Mars mission is replaced by a false memory of his deepest desire as analyzed by psychiatrists - that he saved the world from an alien invasion at the age of 9. The REKAL staff begin the memory-implanting procedure, and run into the same problem as they did earlier - the incredible memories they are about to insert are already there and real.

I have a hard time suspending belief, (which is really the sign of a good movie) due to tech that seems to violate the laws of physics. A tunnel through the core of the earth? Really? C'mon, that's just flat out impossible. The pressure at the core would be 3.5million times greater than at the surface, and the temperature wouuld be 10,000 degrees F. How are you supposed to tunnel through that without:
the tunnel walls collapsing immediately, or
the contents of the core geysering out through the tunnel due to ambient pressure differentials
let's be honest. those tunnel walls wouuld have to be more than reinforced concrete!!! we will probably never have the tech to accomplish such a feat.
I was looking forward to this movie, and didn't mind paying $36 for the three of us, or the $10 in candy we snuck in, or the $10 for two sodas we bought, but when i saw this, it really was a buzz kill for me, and kinda ruined the rest of the movie. I sure wish the movie invested better in a science advisor!?

Well Jessica Biel was wrong. Maybe she should read the source material more instead of regurgitating what someone told her to in an interview lol. The original Total Recall changed around certain aspects of the book's plot, and in turn Total Recall 2012 followed those exact aspects that were changed for the 1990 movie... yeah, i'd solidly consider that to be a re-make.
Oh yes, I forgot to mention the stupidity of people travelling straight through the core of the earth to get to the other side... that was just plain ridiculous. Some people didn't even realize that's what was happening. My dad saw the movie on opening night and when I spoke to him about it, he asked me what those scenes were about, and when I explained it to him he was surprised - he didn't even realize that's what was going on lol.

Wait...what? Seriously? Did they even try to explain how the tunnel worked? How long did it take to make the trip? What is so important to get from one side of the planet to the other that they would build this elevator? How many people can it carry?
Do I need to see the movie just to see this stupid elevator?

The book which the 1990 movie and the 2012 movie are based on, was written in the 1960s by Phillip K. Dick. He was perhaps the most brilliant sci-fi writer ever, as there are a TON of movies that have been made based on his books:
- Blade Runner, probably the most well known one, was based on his book 'Do Androids Dream Of Electric Sheep?'
- Total Recall was based on his book 'We Can Remember It For You Wholesale'
- Screamers (one of my favorite lower budget sci-fi movies) was based on his short story 'Second Variety'
- Minority Report was based on his short story of the same name
- Paycheck was based on his short story of the same name
- Next (that bad Nicolas Cage movie) was loosely based on his book 'The Golden Man'
Those are just what I know off the top of my head, but i'm sure that there are a lot more movies that were based on his writings. He was a giant influence to science fiction media.

LMAO
They did not explain this tunnel at all. The time it took them to get from 'United Federation of Britain' through the core of the earth to the other side of the planet at 'The Colony' seemed to me like a matter of a half an hour or so. That's how I gather the movie portrayed it.
The importance of this stupid elevator is this:
In the future, something like 90% of the earth is uninhabitable due to chemical and biological warfare in the past, used during World War 3, destroying everything and causing the majority of the planet to be inhospitable. As a result, you now have only two habitable places where people live: the 'United Federation of Britain', which is comprised of the UK islands, and a chunk of Western Europe (I think), and then you have 'The Colony', which is on the other side of the planet. I'm not sure exactly where this is supposed to be, but the brief map they show at the beginning of the movie to me looks like Australia, or somewhere in the Asia/Pacific area (someone please clarify this for me). I'm guessing its closer to Asia, as we see a lot of Asians inhabiting this place. Anyways, as a result of the majority of the earth being uninhabitable, habitable living space is at a premium and therefore these two places, the United Federation of Britain and The Colony, are supposedly at odds against each other. And then you have some resistance movement attacking the United Federation of Britain.
The idea of this giant elevator is that it transports people from the UFB to The Colony and vice versa. It is the only way to travel between the two, considering the wrecked state of the planet. The elevator, from what I gather, can transport thousands of people at once. Yes, it literally is a giant freaking elevator that travels straight through the center of the earth.

So, they have the technology, money and manpower to build a huge elevator that travels 4,000 mph (assuming a two hour ride) through the center of the Earth but they cannot seem to sort out their ecological problems to create a little more space for their crowing civilization?
I understand now why TR's brain was recoiling.

Yes it did, actually...
But it made no fvcking sense - they just threw it into the movie as a little easter egg to the original. Made NO SENSE AT ALL.

It looks bad, but the two women in it would almost make it worth seeing. But as far as her saying it followed the original writings more closely, it's just a claim, plenty of other movies have claimed to do so yet were steaming piles.
