Today was the most embarrassing day at the gym ever!
Wow. Ok, so I was doing legs today. I wanted to hit 315 on squats for the first time. I had been putting up 275lbs the last few leg workouts for 5-6 reps and I wanted to step it up to 6 plates. Well I warmed up legs good with 5 mins cardio, 2 sets leg-extensions, 2 sets leg curls. Then I headed over to the squat rack. I continued warming up, 135x12, 185x12. Into my first working set I did 225x8. Second working set I did 275x6. I was feeling really good and 275 felt so light, so I decided it was time to hit 315 for the first time. I have never attempted anything over 275 before.
I stacked the 315lbs on and then was talking to a buddy doing chest. I was telling him how I never attempted this, but he agreed if I could do 275 that easy I should put this up no problem. Well..... didn't happen. I got all amped up put the 315 on my traps then lowered it to 90 degrees. At this point it was, "oh my". I had that split decision to make. I felt like If I would be able to save it my form would of been bad and I could potentially hurt myself. Once that thought went through my head I gave it up. I dropped my body forward putting the weight on my back as I let it come to the mid thigh safety bars. Thankfully there were safety bars. I am very loud and obnoxious when I work out. I grunt, growl, throw weights. In other words I probably had everyone's attention when I attempted this. I shrugged it off and laughed and my buddy helped me rack the weights. Well just thought I would share my most embarrassing moment at a gym.

Better to be embarrassed than hurt.

Glad you're ok bud, I've seen a couple guys in my time end up with serious injuries. When in doubt, bail safely, just like you did. You'll put up 315 sooner than later
Keep up the good work.

Ya I think I made the better decision.
Plantet Fitness is the most retarded excuse for a gym I ever heard of. "Judgement free zone". Well feed you pizza every monday. If you grunt, drop your weights, or are too loud a siren goes off. What a joke. What kind of morons would even enjoy that environment??!
No, no I won't bro. I'm more pissed that I didn't put it up than anything.
Yes I am glad not too have an injury. My lower back is sore and probably will be for a day or so, but ill be ok. Amazing what a difference between 275 and 315 is. 40lbs makes a big difference. Maybe before I try it again I will do 295 first, haha.

Good for you bro, a man must exceed his limits sometimes in order to know exactly where those limits are, glad you aren't hurt.

No worries. Sure it may have been embarrassing today but you will forget about it and just mark it up as a fail.
I have a similar story. Working chest and trying to hit a new max. I was working my way up while cutting a few months ago. Most I ever got was 440 at 225. I work at it a little more and decide its time to double my bodyweight on bench. I was feeling good, warming up, hit 425 with ease. I knew I would easily break 450 today with how easily I got 440 last time. Get down under the bar, unrack it, and thats when I knew it wasnt happening. I start to go down and can barely control the speed of the bar. Get to my chest and cant get it more than an inch off. Have to have my spotter practically curl the weight up. Everyone was watching as I dont think they have seen anyone go over 350 in this gym. I was embarrassed, chalked it up as a loss and moved on. One week later i hit it easy then did 455 for 1 as well

Thanks. Ya your right, we have to put ourselves to the test sometimes. Next time I think I will get a spotter.
Exactly right. I am chalking it up as a fail and moving on. I think I will try to gradual add weight in the future vs. adding 40lbs at a time. haha. I really didn't have any doubt I would be able to do it. Well lesson learned and next time I will come out the victor!

Cool story. Glad you okay and smart enough to drop the weight.
Now you can go back in a week and hit it!!!

Good to hear you are good. Lifting accidents aren't a joke. . . That shit can fvck you up. That's why I don't try to attempt shit without a spotter. Just after seeing some of these accidents it's not worth it to me.

Thanks, ya It sucked having to give it up, but at least I am able to go to the gym today.
Thanks, no lifting accidents are no joke. I respect the weight, but should of got a spotter. At least I am not out of commission. I could easily be hurt from all that weight and be out of the gym for a long time. For that I am thankful.

Hey you had the balls to get under it.
July 3, 2009
Second squat day with 315. Already did it for 4
I was going to do touch and goes with a bench. Squat touch the
bench lightly come up. 1st one went down touched and sat
So I am sitting on a bench with 315 on my back. Can't get up
Spoter sits behind me . Bear hugs me. Lifts me and 315 up
Rack the weight and fell pretty damn stupid. I did it before
and I did it after. But I got over it and mentally never let happen again.
You will have go lift days and bad lift days. Just keep lifting.

Crashing the weights because you're trying a new max is nothing to be embarrassed about.
Embarrassing is what I did. I did a intense squat session and when I finished I racked the weights. My head was spinning a little and I wasn't really thinking. I stripped ALL the plates off one side and before I know it the bar goes skyward and the other side diving to the floor. HUGE crash. Everybody looks my way. I loudly announce "I hate when people dont strip their weights".

Great to hear this instead of My out of the gym injury thread!

Pushing your body past failure is never embarrassing. Relax regroup and keel going.

For me squats are 90% mental. If I know I can do it they are never a problem
If I have any doubt at all I won't make it.
The mind is a powerful thing.

good story man, i say fu*k it everyone stuffs up at the gym every now and then!
I was once doing skull crushers and had about 15kg on each side of the barbell i was doing high reps so i got up to about 13 wanted to push 14 then my tris gave out and the weights dropped off each side one side at a time, making a massive noise. I just laughed it off and didn't think about it. My gyms really oldschool and no1 really cared they came over to help but personally i say its nothing to get embarrsed over. just goes to show that ur trying.

Dunno if anyone said this, but take smaller jumps and progress up to that 315 pretty sure you could hit it sooner than you know it if you work your way there over a few weeks.
And just be glad no major bodily harm occurred, then it would be really embarrassing.

I lied. wth 10lbs on squats. No, I will probably just jump to 295 and get comfortable for a couple weeks with that then do 315.

Atleast your pride was all that was bruised!! Best to lift smart as you did. Years ago i was about 20, I was living in delray fl and trained at palm beach gym, kind of a hole in the wall but had some monsters there. I was squatting prob 275ish and was at one of those upside down V racks, couldnt get my last rep up, got the bar back on the rack but it was ugly. One of the big guys bitched me out for not using a spotter, then introduced me around and made sure I was comfortable getting a spot, said he injured himself doing the same thing. Yep, I felt like a tool!!

glad u are alright like everyone else...
however, i have a question. whats the point of throwing weights like u say u do. i understand the grunting, but why does this new young generation feel that they are so hardcore, that by being a ass in the gym it makes u stronger.
esp if ur still not able to squat 315...
but again, glad u are safe.

Not able to squat 315? That's not a piece of cake for a guy that weighs 165lbs. That's twice my weight! Also I don't always throw weights. Rarely do I do this. However yes sometimes it feels good to slam the 80 lb dumbbells down after pressing them over my head. What's the big deal?

i wasnt downing u on the lift or amount, sorry if u took it that way.
i was going on what u said, and u said u throw weights and are obnoxious in the gym.
i was asking why u do that, why the young generation thinks it makes them more hardcore?
no big deal, i just think its fcking retarded people act that way

Been there done that before too.
-
10-10-2012, 04:25 PM #37
I don't think it makes me more hardcore, but maybe it does.
I'm just in the zone when i lift. I have disturbed or five finger death punch going and I am in my own world in there. I don't really care what other people think. I also work out with anger. It helps me vent and I find it quite helpful and enlightening. If it offends you or someone else, sorry, but I just don't give a fvck. There is a place called planet fitness for people that don't like noise...

im ancient man, but u just made my day...thanks...
its cool u get in ur zone, i do the same. i took it as u throw ur weights around like some of the young tards now adays yelling, lightweight, and all the other ronnie sayings...
but u clarified it as dropping dumbells...cranking in the gym is one thing but being obnoxious is another..
and again, thanks for making me feel young again..
