rarely is it ever a good idea to hire friends or family members. it just never works out. i've hired and fired friends before, can't think of any of them i still speak to.

as a manager, you need to maintain an air of aloofness with your staff for this very reason. I can be very friendly with my staff. But if they screw up and it is serious enough, they know they are gone. I am not in the habit of hiring friends, but sometimes the people you hire/work with become your friends, and sometimes you need to hire someone you really need to trust. Sometimes I have had to hire a trusted associate/friend.

Sucky thing, especially if you became friends at work and not having anything for you to do with hiring a friend.

I never hire friends or family. I'll do everything I can to help them find work, however.

When owning my business my father hired a family friend and fired him for being a lazy ass after about 6 months. He just wasnt performing. 3 years later he gave him another shot and fired him again. He is still friends with the family today, hanging out with my brother on almost a daily basis and no grudge towards my father

from personal experience, if they were a friend before you hired them it will be difficult and sometimes heart wrenching to let them go but you still have to do it so i've found starting off with a couple of good attributes they have right out of the gate followed with a quick dismissal from their position which is then followed immediately by some reassurance that you will provide them with a reference and expedite the workers comp (unemployment assistance) process takes the sting off.
if they were your employee first and then became your friend it's much easier.

Sounds like he knows he is a lazy ass and just doesnt care. He probably hangs out because he knows he cant get any better friends and he is a free loader. Just saying.
OK we need more details; or at least I do. What happened? Why are you firing him?

Yeah that's what I figured. Your brother and family are to good hearted because they have known him forever and cant turn him away. That being said is all well and fine as long as your brother is aware of it and OK with it.
I have known people like this and have limited my interactions with them. It's hard especially when it's been a life long friend but it doesnt do you or them any good in the long run. It's sort of like being a co dependent to a drug addict or enabling them.
Hopefully your brother is getting something out of the relationship emotionally and it's not just a habit.

My brother know but I feel he just turns a blind eye. He loans him money and tries to tell me he will pay him back, put a down payment on his car, buys him sporting event tickets, etc. I personally can't stand watching, what I feel to be, my brother being used. But he is happy and not struggling with his money so the choice is his. He is an adult and I know he sees it so its obviously a choice he doesnt mind making.
I personally have no issues with the guy other than my dissaproval towards my brother for letting him use him. He is a nice guy that helps my brother whenever he needs it.He will help him do things fo his business simply for lunch as payment. Other than the free loading he is a great friend to my brother so looking past that I have no problem with the guy

Just text him "You're fired" and be done with it.

When I first worked for this company, they use to fire you by a fax!

I was laid off by a family member, it kinda sucked. But it was due to a company financial issues, I wasn't fired so the circumstances were a little different. I was more bitter he knew about it weeks in advance and didn't give me a heads up, so I could look for another job and put money aside.
