Can I be doing more harm than good?

I don't want to share my occupation but lets compare it to a construction worker. I work 10-11 hr days Monday-Friday in a very laboring job (pulling/lifting/pushing heavy weight). At the end of the night I am beat- gym is out of the question during the work week. The risk ratio for injury when I am this fatigued it too high. I started working out on the weekends and doing full body splits focusing more on compounds than isolated movements to help keep the gym sessions short but effective. Now my question is over time shouldn't this pretty much kill my CNS? I mean I am pretty much getting no rest except sometimes for Sundays.

I work 8-12 hrs a day 6 days a week and I have a similar problem. If I am on the 8-10 hour day program I can get my work out in after work, anything over 10 and I do not have energy/time to get in the gym. My two little boys need my attention more than I need to boost my ego and my work requires me to be sharp and on point. So a lack of sleep and energy would cause me to make bad decisions which will cause my company money which would in turn cause me to lose my job.
So to put in perspective I love my gym time but I love my children more and my responsibility as a father/provider out ways my desire to be the sculpted body that I used to be when I was single. My lifestyle of eating combined with the workouts I do get in keep me fit..so it all boils down to where you are in your life...I dont think you will wear down your CNS, it will adapt, for me the physical fatigue affects my mental performance thus I have to make choices. If my job didnt require concentration and lucid decision making I would not have a problem pushing my body limits further.

If I listened to my body I would never get out of bed.

Good nutrition. Be very concerned with getting adequate rest. And exactly what lunk said.

Man, I sure don't miss a real work schedule. Specially when you are pushing OT regularly.

Age will determine a lot about how far you can push it, I'm a contractor and can tell you with a great deal of certainty that you will do more harm than good when you don't get adequate rest/recovery, I've been at this a long time and have witnessed it first hand with many others too. The body can only take so much and those long hard hours are much harder on the CNS than a hard workout, stress and cortisol related issues will ruin your gains and your health. I don't have a great answer for dealing with it other than as being self employed for the last 2 decades I have taught myself some self discipline concerning how much I work, If you're employed it is obviously much harder to control hours and stress to allow for a decent workout schedule. I suck at diet but I also know that it is a major key to all of this, definitely something to consider.
