Does Being Cold Give You a Cold?

Haven't watched the video but one of the most common "wives tales" is that the cold makes you sick. No. Viruses made you sick. During colder months people spend more time inside; windows and doors closed, air recirculated. In these environments viruses are highly communicable and will incubate longer. Couple this with poor hand washing habits and its not hard to understand why colder months lead to an increase in influenza, colds, and other common illnesses. Having said that, once infected, it's important to stay warm, hydrate, and rest. Running around in cold weather when your immune system is taxed trying to fight the virus/bacteria you've been infected by, will prolong or escalate the illness period.
Saying the cold "makes you sick" makes as much sense as the old (ridiculous) belief that you shouldn't sleep with a plant in your bedroom because it takes oxygen OUT of the environment. Yes, I've heard that said many times too. Good grief. Lol

Many years ago they tested this theory in Alaska. Guess what? Germs don't survive to good in the cold. Another reason they say when making gear or ??? its a good idea to take it from heat straight to the refrigerator to kill germs. They don't do well with rapid temperature change either.

I have worked outside in the winter for near 20 years and the only time I ever get sick is when our jobs get shut down and I am laid off. That's when I am stuck inside with the windows closed and no fresh air.
I believe this is also the reason that kids are a cesspool of germs. The schools just recirculate the same crap air and it never gets purified or changed out.

We get sick from germs; not from cold weather. We also tend to get runny noses in the winter when we are sick or not sick. We tend to rub our noses when we have runny noses; which is one of the quickest ways to transfer germs. It is not good to touch your face as your mouth, nose and eyes allow germs to enter our bodies and get us sick. Also, people who are sick, rub their noses, then touch door handles and everything else which makes it easy to transfer to others hands. This is why it is good to keep washing your hands to get the germs off that could potentially get you sick.

You know it. lol
Yes that is true also, it's a good way to test if it will crash but most germs can not survive sudden large temperature change. Changes in oxygen, moisture, temperature, and acidity can make bacteria die or become inactive.

Extreme weather, both hot and cold, is a form of stress to the body, and can have negative effects on your immune system. This can then make you sick if you're exposed to new germs, or even by re-activating germs already hibernating in your body. One interesting example is the cold sore.

The ER doc almost had his own heart attack when he saw my father-in-law's chest and all those red streaks so I had to explain what it was. Lol

a possible "explanation" for the coin treatment is, again, the "wind" theory. when you're having a cough or a cold, you're having wind in the chest. so you put "metal" to the windy area and scrape hard to remove the wind. usually till you see dark red abrasions or bruising in the skin.
