It is enjoyable.
Here's my thought process I love the look of old school Arny and Zane. Bodybuilding got perverted into building a hulking mass and it's not very pleasing to the eye IMHO. IFBB wants to grow their sport so they bring about the Men Physique to have the "beach body" What does that mean? good damn question. I've seen some guys get lower placements because they were too big, out of proportion, to lean etc. Right now there is no standard in what that look is to be but they know they don't want freakish looks such that body building has grown into.
So if Arny or Zane took the stage today against Heath, Cutler, Green etc they would get blown away because they are not those monsters. So drop them into the Physique class (btw that competes at heights instead of weight) and I'd be those two would dominate. And with the rules changing soon, box shorts instead of board shorts I think the IFBB is going to be looking more for bodies like that of Arny and Zane.

You may or may not be correct with that. The physique judges are a fickle bunch. I have a buddy that's been competing most of his life in BBing. He's 6' 6" and will step on stage 240-245 and he looks small compared to a guy thats 6" 230. He's always coming in third or worse. One show he had an injury that kept him from getting as peeled as he does for BBing so he one time and one time only took the stage in Physique and he walked away with a sword. lol
I have friends that say I should compete. I'm 6' 4" 240 at 10% If i cut down to 230 for a show I'll look freaking small compared to other heavyweights. I could do physique but damnit I work my legs. lol
Honestly outside of bringing back the vacuum pose as a mandatory to eliminate the igf, hgh, tortoise shell belly I think they should switch over to height classes in BBing instead of weight. A guy 5' 10" at 230 is always going to look like a bigger thicker beast than a 6' 2" 235 body builder. Funny how long muscles are a curse on stage.
Great discussion Kel. Way to keep the personal jabs out of an hypothetical conversation.

There's a category in the UK called 'Classic Bodybuilding' where guys are limited to their weight based on their height. Does this exist in the States?

Funny, a friend of mine and former successful amateur BB-er, now trainer, entered a physique contest. He was much thinner than in competitive days but was still told he was "to muscular" so yes, it's gotta evolve.
Vacuum pose? A lost art. Arnold, Zane were great at it and remember Brian Buchanan? His was awesome with such a small waist. And yes, the taller you are the tougher it is, but when completely filled out it's a killer look. 6'4 and 240 is impressive stats evander.
Good discussion as well. Never a reason to take personal shots at a quality member.

Here you go. They are in kg's so multiply that number by 2.2 to get lbs. somebody who is 5'11 (180cm) can be a maximum of 189lbs.
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 168 CM CATEGORY: maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100
(Example: A competitor, who is 167 cm tall, may weigh a maximum of 67 kg)
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 171 CM CATEGORY:
maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100 + 2 kg
(Example: A competitor, who is 170 cm tall, may weigh a maximum of 72 kg)
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 175 CM CATEGORY:
maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100 + 4 kg
(Example: A competitor, who is 174 cm tall, may weigh not more than 78 kg)
- UP TO AND INCLUDING 180 CM CATEGORY
maximum body weight = body height [cm] minus 100 + 6 kg
(Example: A competitor, who is 180 cm tall, may weigh not more than 86 kg)
- OVER 180 CM CATEGORY (this category has 3 sub height/weight)
180 – 190 cm = body height [cm] minus 100 + 8 kg (i.e. height 189 cm max. weight 89 + 8 = 97 kg)
190 – 198 cm = minus 100 + 9 kg
(i.e. height 197 cm max. weight 97 + 9 = 106 kg)
Over 198 cm = minus 100 + 10 kg
(i.e. height 204 cm max. weight 104 + 10 = 114 kg)NO SOURCES GIVEN

There's something that many people have a time understanding when it comes to competitive bodybuilding.
It's not a contest to see who's the best looking guy.
It's not a contest to see who has the physique the general public would aspire to have.
It has nothing to do with either one of those things. If it were about those things, tons of guys could step on stage at 190lbs and 8-9%bf and be competitive. It would be even more boring than it already is. It would simply be a Mr. America pageant.
If bodybuilding were like the pageant many seem to want, it would be like a NASCAR even where everyone drove a nice but not absurd luxury car around the track at no more than 90mph. And guess what? Still no one would watch.

i am trying to give him the benefit of the serious doubt. in any event just so i have this straight:
it would seem turning pro would be cause to describe it as a GREAT journey??
so basically mockery you are saying u went from a fat ass 30 something (like i was 2 yrs ago) to a pro BB'er in less than 17 months..
now i see why u only had very limited time to show up in here periodically to make your antagonistic remarks.. u were a busy fellow!Last edited by --->>405<<---; 01-23-2014 at 07:09 AM.

Cmon guys. It's entirely possible. It's really not that hard to become a pro BBer. You know what's really hard? To become a pro WWF wrestler. Now that would be impossible to do in 17 months. Takes at least 18.

You are correct with he spirit of the sport but there is the business side too. After Arnold and the "Golden Days" of BB the sport went into decline. The IFBB needed to attract new people and make for broader appeal. Hence both mens and women's physique, women's bikini, dropping women's BBing and adding "fitness pole dancing" or whatever they are calling it.
You want to talk about pageants? Look into the WBFF, quickly becoming a competitor of the IFBB in drawing athletes.

i did the same thing as Kevin Levon dieted up to a show and won, Im pretty much amazing
-
the hardest part about being so amazing is with a pro card you cant compete on the regular circuit any more and the pro circuit is full of freaks and the yearly membership is a lot more. hardly was worth it.
-
But not to worry AD, ill still give free advice to you regardless of what i charge at work. For the sake of brothers in iron, i got your back.

The heyday of bodybuilding was actually the 90's through early 2000's. That's when it was on TV, there were pro bodybuilders that had their own workout shows on TV, ESPN covered it and the Olympia was packed. You had stacked lineups, Dorian, Gaspari, Nasar, Levrone, Ray, Wheeler, Titus, Matarazzo, Ruhl, Gunter and then Coleman....on and on and on and on.
Now the Arnold era or Golden Age of Bodybuilding, that's what first brought real attention to bodybuilding, but the 90's and early 2000's is the pinnacle of pro bodybuilding's success. From there it's been a rapid devastating downward spiral. Sure, there's some big names but no one and I mean no one really cares. Now the modern era, that's the dominating era of the supplement companies. That's all bodybuilding is any more.
