Your best friend just killed someone...

It was in self defense, according to him. But there is absolutely no way to call it self-defense. He would go down for murder no matter what.

You're the only witness. You saw it from a distance and you don't know what transpired before the killing.

    You're questioned by the cops.

    Do you turn him in?

I think the best thing to do is to call up The Godfather and tell him what you saw and have him report it on your behalf (if that's what he thinks you should do).

    Pretty vague mate.

    intentionally so, I imagine.

first of all, I'm slightly biased against cops in general. Too many bad experiences previously. I don't trust them.
Second of all, we are talking about my best friend. I've known him longer than some of you have been alive.

I understand that what we see is not always what happened or how it went down.

Before I uttered a word, I'd ask for my attorney. This is a good stalling tactic.

And since I only witnessed from a distance, and don't know what transpired previously, I'd be skeptical about being a good witness. So instead of risking saying anything derogatory, I'd probably keep my mouth shut until I could figure out for myself how and what I want to say. Yes, I'd risk a contempt charge and some jail time by not saying anything.

But for a mate that I've shared a good portion of my life, and shared a great many events/activities, I'd give him the benefit of the doubt and hold my tongue for awhile.

Real friends don't turn on each other. First, you figure out what in the hell happened. then you make a decision.

If it's my friend and I didn't see what transpired prior to the incident, then there's no way that I can say that it wasn't self defense (especially in a stand your ground/castle doctrine state). All I could do is inform the police that I didn't see details due to the distance, request representation if further questioned, tell them I'll discuss this at greater length after speaking with counsel, and hopefully retain the same counsel for the both of us.

i like what TR said. just cuz the cops ask questions doesnt mean u have to answer them right away.

it sounds like, austin, ur saying the cops dont even know who the suspect is at this point? therefore, i (or whoever) would be revealing their identity, because if he would definitely go down for murder, the cops would have to not have a suspect in order for his freedom to still be secure right??

Don't analyze much. The idea is would you, or would you not turn your best friend in if you saw him murder someone. Even if you didn't see what caused the murder.

    Do you say:

    1. I saw him kill that man.
    2. I saw nothing.

If I didn't see the cause, I couldn't say anything....it may well have been self-defense.....so my answer is in post#15

So let's take this to an extreme.....

so let's say it is murder.

I still wouldn't say anything right off the bat.

    Instead, I'd consider the following:

was it a righteous kill? if yes, I'm silent.
if the victim didn't deserve to die, and my best friend was totally in the wrong, then I'd consider one last bit...

if the victim didn't deserve it, AND left behind loved ones, I'd probably be open and honest about what I saw.
If the victim left no one behind, then I'd probably talk, but be guarded in what I said.

Look, best friends don't grow on trees. It takes years to really cultivate the bond that comes with such a friendship, and with it, a deep understanding of who that person is and what they are capable of doing. If I knew someone that was at risk of uncontrollable emotions and actions, I would certainly know it. And I wouldn't care of I wouldn't be interested in anything other than merely an acquaintance friendship.

this is why I don't like these "serious" what if scenarios, because quite often the parameters don't mirror any probably reality.

I think this is one of those questions that no one can answer unless put in the situation. Too many variables.

    TR ur a good dude

if it was my best friend and he told me it was self defense i would believe him. what kind of friend would i be if i did anything else? either way the dude is dead. you're not bringing him back. sounds like my only incentive in talking would be to cover my own ass and that's NOT what best friends do. they cover each others' asses.

Justice now or justice later, either way evil is evil both now and at the judgment seat.

It's a bit of a leap from AAS or beer to Homicide. That's the entire problem with the inner-cities, the "no snitch" rule. It's why families are devastated and killers roam free to kill again.

Austinite - I'll play along... but first a question.... was the person killed a person who deserved it (rapist, child molester, stole from the elderly, mime?), or an innocent bystander?
Innocent bystander- my friend is getting the chair....
rapist or mime - didn't see anything officer
