5. AC/Dc
6. Ronnie James Dio
7. Megadeath
8. Pantera
9. Slayer
10. Danzig

Damn I forgot about Disturbed. I guess I wasn't thinkin about all the newer bands. They should be in my top 10 somewhere.
The Motley Crue kick ass but aren't they just more Rock than Metal And IMO Zombie get a category of his own, his music is so original ....Metaltecno maybe either way they both kick ass

Hmmmm...it would take much too long to really come up with a comprehensive list here, but just to state my opinion on a couple of the previous posts:
First, almost all the bands listed are bands that I love. However, quite a few of them are not "metal." NIN is most certainly not metal, they are industrial, as are Ministry. Static X is a lot more punk than they are metal, and HedPE is definitely not metal. GnR isn't metal either. Metal bands don't have "rock epics" like "November Rain" in their catalog.
Now, having gotten that out of the way, I think that we can all agree that Sabbath/Ozzy is one entry on the list, since they basically "invented" metal. Metallica is certainly on the list as well. Other bands of mention are: Alice in Chains, Tool, Megedeth, Judas Priest, Crowbar, Pantera, Slayer, White Zombie, Marilyn Manson, Brutal Truth, Type O Negative, the list could go on and on. I would even include Slipknot on the list. Hmmm...too many choices...

In no way is StaticX punk! Also Metal is too much of a generic category to exclude some of the bands that you said were "not" metal. Theres acid metal, black metal, death metal, and so on...

So who was the first band to win a Grammy in the "Metal" category?
Jethro Tull!

Man, this is a tough one. Everyone here has made some good points, it's just that things have changed through an evolution of music over time. Even within this one genre. I agree with Strut that Ministry, NIN, etc should be classified more as "industrial" than just metal, but you can't deny that songs like "Just One Fix" and "NWO" are some of the best "heavy metal" songs ever.
As a matter of respect for being one of the first if not THE first ever, you have to give Sabbath/Ozzy their appropriate spot as #1. From there, things have changed a bit as time has passed. Metallica is certainly on the list, but their recent crap has truly diluted their credibility IMO. I'd also have to put Pantera way up on the list (perhaps #2) b/c they truly took "heavy metal" to a new level. Metallica, Slayer, Megadeth, etc all sound pretty hard, but nobody can get you as pissed as Anselmo talking about how he "fucked your girlfriend last night" (Good Friends and a bottle of Pills) or screaming at you on "Slaughtered". They made "heavy metal" REALLY FUCKING HEAVY!
Other notable mentions that haven't been listed yet are Skinlab (Their new song 'Slave the Way' is wicked), Fear Factory, Sepultura, Korn(mostly their stuff before Follow the Leader came out), and Sevendust. There are many others, but I'm tired now so I can't think very well. Oh, and it was nice to see someone mention Soulfly. JUMP THE FUCK UP!!!

OK I had to answer that before anyone else! Because Jethro Tull winning that award was the funniest thing in the history of music! Next to Michael Jackson catching his "Soul Glow Fro" on fire!
Now, Metal!
Iron Maiden
Metallica
Megadeath
Slayer
Pantera
Danzig - meaty mfer!
Motorhead
You can't say that these bands are metal:
VH, Alice in Chains (although that's what they wanted before they were put in the Grunge genre), White Snake (common!), gnr???? POP! I could go on but....
Shit...David I didn't even see that you put the answer at the bottom....

Saw him on the Sacred Heart Tour In Philly... At least I think it was the tour for that album... Could have been Last in Line, those days were kind of fuzzy...lol
Anyway It was the tour we he recorded a live concert tape and a Young Little Buff was all the way in the front row smashed against the guard rail...
Young Buff was no match for the 1,000 of crazies there to see Dio live at the Spectrum and almost suffered many a cracked rib which is one of the reason I started lifting in the 1st place... So I could rock with Dio and all the heavies in the front row...

Well, I guess my choices will pretty well define what decade I went to high school in
1 - Iron Maiden (seen 'em so many times I think I may still have hearing dammage from them!)
2 - Ozzy Osbourne (come on, the Ozman was god in that decade!)
3 - Judas Priest (Rob Halford riding a hog on stage... what more could you want?)
4 - AC/DC (seen 'em a few times too, would you believe one show I got so bombed I never made it to my seat!)
5 - Scorpions (before this "wind of change" mellow out, they rocked!)
6 - Guns'n'Roses (believe it or not, I saw them open for Iron Maiden!)
7 - Motley Crue (Girls girls girls tour was pretty cool with the massive inflatable women on stage!)
8 - KISS (what a show they put on!!! woah! Still listen to them to this day)
9 - DIO (Can't talk about metal without mentionning Ronnie James Dio!)
10 - Def Leppard (again, cool music and one hell of a stage show!)
Honourable mentions:
- Quiet Riot (bang your head!!!)
- Twisted Sister (come on, admit it, you also screamed out "I wannna ROCK!")
- Accept (one hit wonder... Balls to the wall!)
- Whitesnake (not bad, sam them open for the Crüe once...)
- Bon Jovi (bon jovi rocked big time when they started out... saw them open for the Priest!)
You will notice some bands missing... basically most of the "classic rock" (Led Zep, Floyd, Sabbath...) is not there as I do not consider it "metal", it's kick ass classic hard rock! Also newer bands like Metallica and so on are also not in my list as for me they fall under the "new metal" category... a little too new for an old fuck set in his ways

Heres something for net radio users. http://knac.com This is the best station to ever flow on the Los Angles airwaves. It went under a long time ago but now its on the net. They only play hard ass shit. I only wish I could hear it in my car cause all the LA stations since suck.

Red, for the love of God, you consider Bon-freakin'-Jovi metal, and *not* sabbath? I'm going to have to go ahead and disagree with you on that one
-
06-11-2003, 05:51 PM #38
Strut ... Early Bon Jovi (back when they were nothing more than an opening act) was actually quite nice. Of course with popularity they turned into yet another glam-rock hair band.
Sabbath is not metal! They are kick ass hard rock, but they predate metal so much that I think it would demean them to refer to them as metal
