Is anyone really well educated on this or knows someone that had it?

If some of you remember I had posted about my dog and his hip replacement infection. Well the culture came back this week positive for gram negative MRSA. The vet is telling me its very treatable. However been an avid sports fan I know two players in the NFL who both just lost the careers to MRSA.

My vet is saying since its gram negative its not as bad as gram positive but from every thing I have read on line the only difference between the too that I can read is the way the dye reflects on the microscope. I kinda feel like he doesn't know a 100% about this as it was rare in pets and recently becoming a common infection

My dog is not a 100% but he is still ready to play eating and in a good mood. He is just limping bad. The hip is coming on Monday and then they are treating the MRSA infection.

my dad got MRSA in the hospital back in may. i seemed to be the only one concerned with the infection. the internet said it could be fatal due to the fact he had it in his urinary tract.
the doctors and nurses told me it wasnt that big of a deal, and they had plenty of meds to treat it. they said they were more worried about something else that i wasnt too concerned with.

they sure did seem surprised when he died in less than 10 days...

Mrsa is anti-biotic resistant. Heavy doses of strong antibiotics are used to treat it. I have no idea what it's like for animals tho.

I hope he gets better!

I had it twice, took some hard core antibiotics to rid me of it. It ate parts of my leg muscle and part of my butt cheek. It was nasty and painful as hell! I got it from the hospital. When they cut my leg open, the shit that came out there still disgusts me and it takes a lot to gross me out! Make sure to wash your hands very very well! There are also many topical anti-biotic ointments that you can get (bactroban? Maybe?). I also bought some draw salve, it helps draw that nasty shyt out.

Best of luck to your dog. I went through a bout of random abscesses over the course of several months that the doctors said were staph and possibly mrsa although no test were done to rule it out, just given heavy antibiotics and sent on my way. They were entirely random as to the location. A couple just showed up near my tail bone, one of which went away and the other grew until it popped and drained on its own for days. when it popped and started draining I was driving down the street and it just felt like I shit myself,Had to wear make shift maxi pads for that one. The last one I battled was on my calf, after limping for over a week because of the pain I did a little surgery. After I had it all drained out and cleaned up I was left with a golf ball sized crater in its place, and the antibiotics finally started helping.

All of these simply started as what appeared to be a pimple or ingrown hair and snowballed. I know how painful it is and can't imagine what your poor dog is going through right now. Hope he's better soon!

It depends on how much the infection has progressed and how healthy your dog is (as far as how treatable it is and how well he'll recover).

MRSA is methicillin resistant staph aureus, so it is always gram negative. Your doc had no reason to mention that it was gram negative if he already knew it was staphylococcus, but I think he was comparing it to an entirely different bacterial infection which would have been harder to treat.

The difference between gram negative and gram positive involves the bacteria's cell wall structure and which antibiotics will be most effective in treating them (and some gram positive bacteria can form endospores).

Thanks for this. I am getting lots of conflicting answers its making my head spin. They are removing prosthetic tomorrow and I am getting copy of culture lab report. I found a vet specialist in infection and disease who is going to review. $200 for 15 minutes not a bad gig. When he first told me MRSA he didnt sound alarmed until I was totally freaked out. I just have this gut feeling he isnt sure.
