    Casual gamer looking for advice

I know little to nothing about computers. Was hoping someone on here is more savvy. Like I said I am a casual gamer. I'm not looking to play online games really, more stuff like borderlands and civilization.

What do I need out of a laptop to effectively play those? Like I said I don't know much at all about how it all works but if I get deployed anytime soon I would like a way to play some games.

A good cooler/fan, a decent cpu and a good graphics card.

Cheaper to get a desktop always. Laptop is more portable, but will be expensive and generally less powerful.

I've never played Borderlands, but Civilization, you're going to want 16gb ram, a decent videocard and probably an I7

Dude, no. Notebooks can probably run Civ V. I have a 4gb laptop that I used for Total War games!!

    It was merely Athlon too.

It's not going to take much to play those games but I would at least get a laptop with an i5 processor and a video card built in instead of onboard graphics. I prefer nvidia but ati Radeon would work

It depends on how much performance means to you and how much you want to spend. Games like Borderlands are very hardware heavy and the game environment is half the experience. Civilization can be enjoyed on lower settings as it is turn based strategy.

I've played civ V with a core 2 quad, 8gb hackintosh. It runs way too choppy

If that core 2 quad was running windows native it could probably still run most steam games or just install Linux. Linux is less resource hungry and steam run native now

most of those steam games really are not that resource hungry as long as you put them on medium settings. Again I would get a machine with at least the specs I posted earlier

What's your budget? Keep an eye on sales. Dell does regular deals and have been a customer of theirs since I lived at home and my dad was the purchaser of new computers. I've only bought one non-Dell PC because it was a ridiculous sale on a beast of a PC made by Gateway... bought it at Costco of all places.

There are quite a few nerds that are jacked. Just because you're a nerd, it doesn't mean you can't throw some weights around.

I browsed the USA Dell website. Look for higher-end Inspiron (5000-7000 series) or low-end XPS laptops. Their XPS series are meant for gamers, which is what my desktop is. Alienware is overpriced and way out of your budget anyways. Look for one that has an i7 processor and at least 8gb of DDR3 ram and 1tb of hard drive space. HDMI outputs are common on almost all computers these days so you could hook up your laptop to a TV if you have one available during deployment. I use my TV as my computer monitor, it's great for games, Netflix, and porn.

Thanks man, I will go check it out now. I have been consistently surprised that you can get a decent laptop for games pretty cheap. I thought it was always like 2k or bust.

    Nah.

Mine can run crysis 3 on ultra with about 30fps (terrible I know) and it cost me around £800 to get the parts to make it. Well, I just bought the parts, my cousin built it.

The most important thing I can advise is try cheats for simple games like, cs go, it's much easier and more interesting to play with them, especially if you are a newbie. 5 year old thread bro. I’m sure whatever he bought in ‘15 is already outdated

There's a minimum number of posts one needs in order to have full access, I get it. We normally don't hit up threads that have been left alone for so long. I see this is your first post. We all make mistakes but we come to learn, grow and share. Welcome to the forum.
