Aquarium Fish Tank
Up until 3 days ago I had a 10 litre tank in my bedroom with one axolotl and one goldfish in it.
Then I did a water change and something went wrong and they both died within 3 hours.
Starting from scratch I'm thinking of getting a long tank (somewhere between 3ft and 6ft long) and putting 4 axolotls in it. I'll keep a big barrel of treated water in my attic for doing water changes so that I don't have a mishap again. Axolotls are fine in room temperature water, you don't need a heater.
I think I'll put lots of tiny little live fish in with the axolotls and let them be food for the axolotls and just add more of the tiny fish once or twice a month.
My last axolotl was albino, totally white all over. I'll try to get 4 axolotls all a different colour. Even better if they mate.
Anyone have a fancy aquarium at home?

Always wanted one, but figured maintenance was going to be too much of a hassle.
Damn, a 6 foot long tank would be awesome. Post some pics?

I had an aquarium built into my bar in my man cave for years and I thought you were only supposed to replace 20% a week so as to leave some of the bacteria and not disrupt the PH levels to much...believe it or not the tank needs to be somewhat dirty...

Mine was only about 6 inches... I think it had more growing to do. I think they go up to 9 inches.
I'm gonna prioritise finding a nice place to live in the next 3 months, and then I'll look for a tank off Gumtree or whatever. Axolotls stay along the bottom of the tank so I can get a tank that's only about a foot or two high, but really long (between 3 and 6ft).
The young babies cannibalise each other so that should be interesting to watch if my four adults mate.

Fresh water?!
Eww
I still have a fresh water 40 gal, wife “takes care” of it
About 15 years back I was all into marine aquariums - I think that thing cost me more that sauce does now
It was like 6’ long - loved that thing, but maintaining that thing is such a chore. . . It was at about 3/4 hours of work per week + almost 100 Bucks a month in supplies
I’d love a reef tank now - but, this whole life thing gets in the way

In my best aquarium days I had two 120g saltwater tanks. They were there best things ever... Calming, peaceful, beautiful.... I actually thought taking care of a 120 was easier than fidgeting with a 29g or 55g, I had those too. I jumped right into saltwater tanks because of a roommate, and I was hooked. Never tried freshwater but i always wanted a big plant tank.
But then this happened to me too... Kids, family, job..... Now my youngest has a goldfish in a 7 gallon fishbowl.

I miss staring at my marine tank - that thing looked cool
Thought I had a picture of it, but this was almost two decades back

Kimbo, always like to give everyone the benefit of a doubt as no one is perfect (imo), but once again this has taken an unnecessary turn to the dark & possibly inflammatory side, so I’m out.

This was my last reef tank, started off as a 90 gallon 12 years prior, few Leaky tanks, it ended up down at 30 gallons. Probably the biggest waste of time and money I’ve done recently. Glad since I moved I put an end to that

It is nice to watch but that little tank took 2 hrs a weekend to maintain and 2-3 feedings a day, I had to show my cat sitter how to do it when we went on vacations, storms........had to get a generator hooked up ASAP to keep water flow, make make water, add supps, then the money, yup expensive.

Amphibious lizards (such as the salamander) are born in water, and they have gills for breathing under water. When they're juveniles they remain in the water and continue to breathe under water using their gills. Into adulthood, they start to grow lungs and then they leave the water and live the rest of their life on land breathing with their lungs.
The axolotol is strange though, because it is born in water, lives as a juvenile in water, and then matures into an adult without ever developing lungs, it just stays in the water all its life.
But here's where it gets really cool. . .
The genome of the axolotl is very long, it's even longer than the human genome. Maybe it's so long because there's information in it for regrowing amputated limbs. Another reason might be that there are parts of it that have been temporarily disabled or deactivated. The axolotl must have had an ancestor 50,000 years ago that developed lungs and walked on land, because it's possible to get an axolotl to grow lungs and become a terrestial lizard by administering a hormone to it.
So I'm gonna get a tank and keep four axolotls in it. Every month I'll buy one more axolotl and give it the hormone, so there will be five in the tank. This fifth axolotl might die if the metamorphisis doesn't go right. I'll have to try this experiment once a month until it works. Might take me a couple of years. Or it might work first time.
