I always use the bench press with the safety bars at the side.
Cuz et al. will of course want to know my 1RM . . . which is 210 lbs . . . which is adequate for me as I box at light welterweight and run a half-marathon in 1hr 43min.
If I ever decide to sacrifice my cardiovascular performance, my overall health and approximately 15 years of my retirement, I might re-orientate my goals toward strength and see if I can get up to about 260 lbs.

Nasty.
Happened to me a couple of weeks ago. Obviously a lot less weight 150ish.
Dropped and rolled forward untill it was on my legs so I could sit up and lift off, uncomfortable but not life threatening.no open source posting

Yeah I don't even do barbell bench anymore. Shoulders can't take it, but I also go to a private gym and the owner is a woman. She's not weak by any means, but not chancing it. Dang rhats gruesome!

Not my first rodeo. Happened a lot of years ago in gym I was in the back room by myself, and a lot more weight. At the time I tried to go for a narrower grip to press it, I was gassed so i lay there with the barbell on my chest shouting for someone and thinking what to do. until I rolled it down my body, after that experience I knew what to do when it happened again.

Gruesome vid, worse than the squat death that was posted.
We had a USC football player do something similar years ago. The strength coach (who was later sued by the player) apparently wasn’t attentive & the 275 pounds actually dropped onto his throat and fractured his larynx.
He had reconstructive surgery & although he went un-drafted, did play shortly in the NFL.
To Stocky’s point, rolling the bar over your nads isn’t fun, but I preferred doing that then calling out for help. Vanity

When I'm in a gym that doesn't have safety bars on the sides of the bench press, I take the bar down onto the ground, and then lie down on the ground underneath it. If you need it a little higher then put it on top of other plates, like this:
It's funny, I was at the dentist today and she said I had a cavity and needed a filling, so she said it would be £9 for metallic, or £70 for white. I was mulling it over and I said 'I could live another 50 years so these teeth have to do me that long, so give me the best filling'.
So you make the purchase and get the best fillings to last you til your 85, and then in your 20's you strangle yourself with a bench press bar.
This human condition we're all living is a bit mad. I mean some of us get kids and grandkids and retire to go on cruises for 20 years . . . and then some of us have an accident at the gym.
My boss at work died back in the Spring, he was in his 50's. When the chemo went badly and he knew he was on his way out, he was apologising to people for dying. I think his main concern was his kids losing their father, and secondly his wife losing her husband, and then all the other stuff after that wasn't on his radar. He was a stand-up guy and it was a pleasure and a privilege to know him, I mean that. One more person to look forward to seeing the day I keel over.

Crappy
Poor fucker :/
After my intracranial explosion I only do incline. Otherwise I feel too much blood rushing to my head. Plus I really feel my weight out - no gung ho shit here, unless it’s the smith press
I think I’m up to about 3-5 people I had to rescue from benching accidents at the gym. Last guy was all squirming trying to roll down 185 pounds. Hard for us to remember to stay safe - yeah, these are just weights & that was only 275 - but, it can turn ugly & very fast

Yeah didnt like watching that at all. Been benching for years and im not sure why this bar just sunk down like it did very strange to me it would appear that it was beyond to heavy when that happens but watching him handling the negative he had the strength to handle. Again hard to explain but a spotter or safety racks of course would have prevented. Rip bro

That guy had way more skill than me, and I had already gotten beaten for 2 rounds, so that's why I just went in all guns blazing in desperation.

i agree, especially when lifting heavy, i would always lift in a squat rack.
although 275 lb bench really doesnt seem like enough weight to kill someone, unless they are weak and practically drop the bar to free fall onto their chest.
im not watching the video though, no desire to watch someone die.

in and of itself this is true. what i was getting at is that a decently strong enough guy should be able to get 275 off himself if he were to get pinned under it. and hopefully be careful enough to not drop the bar
in the past ive made the mistake of clicking on similar links, and deeply regretted it. there is no reason to watch videos of people getting mauled and killed.Last edited by JTP$; 09-30-2023 at 06:23 PM.

The ones that get me are like the leg presses when they lock their knees and they bend backwards! lol those make me cringe every time.

Unfortunately, I did see that video. But the way he dropped it on his throat, there was no way to get himself out of it. Besides I think it immediately broke his trachea. And even if he could've, it looked like he had collars on the bar. So that would've made it pretty much impossible to tilt the bar to one side and let the plates fall off.
