That's awesome bro. Shawn is one of the most motivating partners you could train with. I met him last year at a show, then I saw him again in Vegas for his MuscleCamp (here's a pic I got of me and him at Gold's Vegas for the doubters!). He passed out his booklet there "the Shawn Ray Way" which outlines his philosophies on training partners and basically he looks at it as competition. He's gotta lift more and get more reps and he's there screaming in your face during your sets. Hard Core. Flex Wheeler said he didn't like training with Shawn sometimes because he could be too aggressive. But you gotta admit, you're gonna see results when you train balls out like that.
And for the haters out there, Shawn worked his ass off, yes his physique didn't change much over the 90s but it was one of the best packages to ever compete and he did place higher than 4th in the O! How could anyone think all it takes is some gear and gh? Try dedication for decades. Pro BBers are true warriors and they deserve respect. Shawn's retired now, doing the athlete's rep thing for the IFBB but I wonder if he'll ever compete again. Herc, how's he lookin?
Yo Herc, ask Shawn if he posts on any boards...musclemayhem maybe? I'd love to get some advice.

awsome to hear pumpseeker, i got good news for your bro, he is competing again, he told me he is doing to O this year. i think its nutz, im a training with a frikin olympian.
i know what you mean about his training philosophies, i have experienced it. not fully yet, in a few weeks we will start to go balls to the wall. and i did show him up on calfs, he was impressed with that.
he is looking good for taking a year off of training. i only see him fuly clothed so it is hard to judge his true physique.

Shawn Ray is probably the last pro I would look for in training advice. He got his pro card in high 190's and last time he competed he was 215ish, so he's put on an avg of 1.5-2lbs of muscle per year since becoming a pro, pretty terrible. Try and find a single O competitor who has put on less muscle than shawn ray since when they got their pro card.

Well considering he managed to turn pro at the age of 22 I think he knows a thing or 2 about how to build muscle. I think he would ruine his body if he ever went over 220 in contest shape. Either he cant grow anymore or he doesnt want to grow anymore?

This isnt a flame so dont take it as one but...................
Is traing with Shawn Ray actually going to be beneficial to you???
Probably for a while as you are forced to work to you're max, hes stronger then you and you will be inspired to train harder. But there will come a point where the tank will reach empty. A guy like Shawn is from a different gene pool to the rest of us, hes one of the genetic elite and if he's like the majority of pro's hes also 'on' year round. So performing 4-6 sets per exercise may still provide some benefit for him, but for the average guy, even on a cycle, you'd have to say that long term this is going to lead to overtraining and probably injury. I would never dream of going toe to toe with a pro the way they train. Of course there are exceptions, Dorian and Ernie Taylor both train in a heavy duty way, this is something you could emulate and still see long term gains.
But on another level i suppose if it was me and i had the chance to train with shawn or any other pro for that matter id jump at the chance, even if i knew that i wouldnt be getting the benefit that i would from a programme structured round a normal humans capability. (if you havent guessed i take alot of inspitation from Mentzer)

also tell me, how many pros have trained hit and how many has trained a more conventional way? Seems to me like more people grow of volume and maby HIT only works for the genetic freaks.
http://www.deepsquatter.com/strength/archives/ls12.htm <--- good article that puts HIT style training into the proper perspective

Well from personal experience i have found less to be more somtimes. Dropping from 3 sets to two per bodypart gave me great improvments and dropping to 4 days a week from 5 did as well. I think HIT has real benefits. And diddnt Dorian win the MrO a couple of times???? And Mentzer prob would have won in 1980 had Arnold not gotten a gift. (yes Mentzer placed 5th but it's probably one of the most controversial mrO's ever).

I have found more to be more(in sane ammounts not going overboard) if the volume is increased slowely and gpp is worked hard.
Everytime I have done HIT is has given me very good results for exactly 3 weeks then I dont gain anymore and then I start to lose. I even tried it when on a bulk cycle eating everything in sight and still after week 3 all progress stopped. Same with everyone I have trained with.
Dropping your volume made you grow but I can bet that if you had worked on recovery and gpp then that also would have enabled you grow without dropping volume and in the long run I truly belive it would have been more benefical.
But everyone is different I guess thats why this sport is so fun

03-30-2004, 03:18 PM #76
Well i suppose different strokes for different folks. All i was really saying in my first post is that most people couldnt handle the workload volume of the pro's like arnold, lee preist, ronnie etc.
-
03-30-2004, 04:00 PM #77
no comparison to ronnie with arnold

This a good thread you have going hercules, keep the information coming bro. Also, I read where you said to keep your head down doing shrugs. Are there any other mistakes that Shawn has pointed out to you that most people make while lifting?
