    Catabolism leads to muscle breakdown, lack of calories/carbs/protein along with influx of catabloic hormones (cortisone) cause catabolism. It takes on average 4 hours of no food for the body to enter a catabolic state.

    Water rentention just leads to muscle hydration, if anything.

    Nope, actually the opposite. A hydrated cell is more resistant to catabolism.
