Why do you study martial arts?
Just curious as to why you guys study what you do. I personally do it for self defense only. I'm not in it to compete or to get in shape, but to prepare myself just in case something happens when I am out in public or even at my job its very useful.

so my stupid friend who has been wrestling since he was 7 gets put in his place when he decides to grapple with me when he gets drunk.

My father made me do it when I was young cuz I was always getting picked on for being a white boy in a predominantly black and spanish neighborhood. I got very good at it and started competing in combat sambo tournaments when I was 16 in Russia.

Cause I hate cardio
Jits is a Brutal cardio and isometric workout. I hate to run and love to wrestle. I get to test my mind and body against other men of different sizes and shapes in class and there is alot of respect amongst the members.
Plus, it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling to know where I stand against other trained fighters. Post class today, I was buying my double sheese steak with extra everything and I was in my gi and rash guard (I'm bulking and look pretty large at 210 or so). Anyway, some group of construction workers at the cheese steak shop start razzing me calling me Karate kid. I just smiled.
It was funny. There were four of them and they are ragging on me for no reason. The thing is that with my conditioning and technique, I could have made a funny situation ugly. I wasn't all gentlemanly like, When I was leaving, I walked up to the table and leaned in between the four and said they should mind their manners and furthermore, if they disagreed, it was going to take me about two minutes to get to my car; if they had a problem, they could take it up with me in the parking lot. Nobody followed.
I take classes because it lessens the chance I'll be in a fight, but if I'm forced.......my attacker better be one determined mo fo.

its fun...
good workout...
thats about it.
(id laugh at someone walking around campus with a gi and rash on though for sure! unless it was only in the gym area like if they have a cafe downstairs or something. in fact there is some kid that wears bottoms around but all over campus...he also claims to be a black belt in bjj..and got it in 2 yrs from rickson himself)

i hate that too. I wear my school's tshirt alot but that's more just showing support to my local school.
I started BJJ because i was 360 lbs and tired of being a fatass. Hated cardio and honestly...my knees just didn't like to run with that kind of weight. So 120 lbs later, I just LOVE going hard and training with my class mates. Also builds some of the closest sense of comrodity being with a group of guys whose only goals are to better themselves and everybody else in the school.

Miswritten
Ha! I didn't have my gi on, just the rash guard. I can't wear the thing outside of class cause it's always soaking wet. I'd freeze my ass off. If i'd have had the whole ensemble on I'd have been cold and some wierdo.
WTF about the 2 year black belt from Rickson. Average for a blue where I train is about two years/ purple, closer to eight.

ya that kid though...i was like dude..you need to open a school cause there are only like 3 black belts around here in bjj right now (this was then, not now) and hes like uh well..i was thinking about doing that but in karate
i asked him to class before and i was like oh..man i would, but look (shows me some old scar) i just cut my hand last week (clearly healed though) and cant grapple...id love to practice my flying armbars
lol
he also says he trained akido from a grandmaster from japan from the age of 3 to 17, a black belt in TKD and judo, and dabbled in krav maga and muay thai...but yet when i took this karate class (week i know, but it was free at my school before they had anything better) he struggled with the basic moves...odd
but ya anyways, i do it for fun. meet alot of people. usually if i see some with the ears i go up and say hi. people seem to have alot of mutal respect.

i'm in a jujitsu fight club
I train because you tend to develope strong relationships with other fighters, plus it's good fitness, and as a male, you sorta have to know how to fight

hahah, when people "represent" like that, you know they have little training and are posers.. guys who actually train hard all the time, get the whole martial arts hype out of their system

For the same reason I own guns. To protect myself and the ones I care about from people who would try to harm them.

why i study M.M.A.....
Well i couldnt resist to answer to this thread mainly because those that know me on here know i keep a low profile and second i use the board for good info and advise. So here i go.....
1.) I started all of this at the age of 20 weighing 171 (max bench was 175!), and was tired of being skinny, but i'll shortly be turning 29, married with 2 kids but still stay in the game because its in my heart now and NOT my fists!
2.) You learn to fight so you never have to fight. (thats mainly a rule of thumb tho).
3.) During my 9 year run i have accomplished every goal i set forth, like benching over 400 (465 max with NO shirt; over 500 with a shirt), i weighed in at 275ish! Just thinking that i put on 100 pounds on the same height and changed my life.
4.) I like setting good examples for all those that know me. Most that do know me always feel 100% safe in my presence because i dont take any sh$t BUT i also dont start any sh$t being a family man and all.
5.) Direct answer to your question.....besides all the perks......being heavyweight champion in the most dominant sport..... in my own mind/opinion..... i want what will one day be ritefully mine...and that is UFC's heavyweight belt to be exact. I have alot of believers, i train hard and fight harder, i have good coaches, good peers, i love my fellow partners that i train with, it is a sport that displays honor amonst other fighters, and i could go on all day, but hear me now:
Im already in preparation for some underground M.M.A. competition and i will not loose!
So why do i study martial arts?? For pure desire, a career, and for the heavyweight UFC belt...mark those words!!!
