Thinking about getting in the cage and fighting.

I am almost 28 years old. Do you think this is too old to start fighting? I have just started training in submission wrestling, do you think in a year I would be ready for a fight? I am an instructor in Kenpo and have some boxing, how well rounded and prepared will I be with adding the submission wrestling?

anything possible + he said hes well rounded and has basic skills in most of the fields. With a little more practice/experience it can happen!

I doubt it a ufc, pride, wfa type of level but something can still come out of it for fun or as a hobby.

    dont hate

yah... i doubt you can do anything ufc / pride / koc.... but there are TONS of amature / professional fights that go on locally in almost every state. I think with a couple of years of grappling and your experience w/ stand up already...you definately aren't to old. Now if you had no experience stand up either...well, you're not to old still, but man it'd be tough

    either way....good hobby

Yeah I'm not looking to go into the UFC or anything, but I would like to test myself against other skilled opponents just to see where I am and how effective I could be. There are several amateur fighting events in my area so I would have no trouble finding a place.

Age age age to old to old to old. Then on the dead bed you look at the sky and you say damn i should had done it when i add the chance.

Fukk age, i joined an older member gym to give me more motivation and it did just that.

I am 34 years old and the gym i go to now has members from 25-75.

There are tonnes of older guys 50-65 that are in great shape and they dont even look there age.

Was in the shower the other day and 2 guys where talking, one of them said he was a tri athlete, i didnt see is face but he was freaking cut up maybe 165 pounds shredded, my jaw dropped when is said he was 65 years old, he runs each day, bikes and swims.

There is another guy that is involved in MMA has well, he trains and has fun doing it he is 44.

Talking to another guy yesterday he runs for 1 hour and a half each day, he love the extreme sports, motocross and he add to get in shape to do it, cause it pertty rought, this guy is 47, he looks like he is in is early 30.

    Age is crap.

Try some BJJ for submissions. Take down defense and wrestlling skills are what seperate one fighter from another.

Yeah i couldn't decide if I wanted to do bjj for the subs or the wrestling/subs. I picked the wrestling for the takedown defense aspect. I would much rather stand up since that's where my best skills are, but I know I need some training on the ground because I am sure I will end up there.

wrestling may teach you some bad habits... BJJ will show you that strength is not as necessary as skill... my training center has wrestlers that teach all of us BJJ students takedowns... we get the best of both worlds, but seriously you might want to learn some defensive moves so that when you get to the ground you can get back up and work your stand-up

I believed that whole hearted until Matt Hughes DOMINATED Royce Gracie. Royce no doubt more skilled in BJJ that Matt but Matt was WAY too strong and Royce was left helpless. Not that I am Matt Hughes but I don't think I will see a Royce Gracie either. Since I have no wrestling background I figure if I can get a solid teacher hopefully I should be able to avoid the bad habits. But thanks for the info.

You have to think The Iceman Chuck Liddell started with kenpo, he has a tattoo. You are never too old to start and if you get with a great gym you have a chance at anything. Look at the high school teacher Rich Franklin!

28 Yo is not old. I will be 35 this year and still grapple at a world reknowned gym here and I can still take these guys on the ground. My professional life (that which feeds my family) comes first, but it is still a great release. I have grappled many a time with a well known MMA'r mentioned here in this thread. Start with grappling, as you must first get a feel for being on the ground, then move onto submissions. Couple that with sparring and go to it, but you must realize that you will never truely know what you can do until you actually step in the ring. BTW, never underestimate raw power when it comes to the ground. Matt is a good technician, but he wins many matches due to raw strength. There is not a whole lot that technique can do to stop a flurry of rights and lefts from a powerful fighter.

most bjj schools teach seperate submission wrestling classes which is basically modified bjj. I take em both...and there is alot of repetitive moves (moves we usually cover in bjj with little twists)

no idea how i missed this....if you ask any jiu jitsu student...they will tell you that royce , for what ever reason, showed some bad technique. Alot of the mistakes Hughes took advantage of, you'd never expect a purple belt to make yet alone a black belt of his stature.

Gotcha!! I know very little about bjj and would not have picked up on that. Yes I wouldn't expect Royce to make that many mistakes.
