punching power question
I have a bag in my house, and my exercise is usually lifting and occasionally powerlifting. But what I wanna know is, a certain technique to make my punches as powerfull as possible. my friend fights with Todd Medina at his school in OC, and he hits a bag of rocks or something?

I'd concentrate on hitting the bag fast not hard. But if you insist on it... i suggest you wear proper wraps and gloves.
As far as the power goes just make sure all your mechanics are perfect when you hit. No sloppy bag work.

Ask your friend to show you how to hand wrap, and the mechanic of jabs, punch, hook and upper cut. It's much easier to have these demonstrated to you.

Accuracy is far more important than power. People focus on hitting hard which usually forces them to give too much of a wind up which makes the punch very foresee-able (its thats a word) and easier to dodge. As Zim mentionned, speed is a good thing to have. A quick hook or straight cross up the middle tends to put more people out that than haymakers.
Liddell is very good at this. Not that he doesnt posses power, but his ability to throw a swift accurate hook (usually a left) while his opponent attacks puts everyone down.

Accuracy and TIMING are important. Ever notice how Chuck knows just when to put the left hook or overhand right in there?? He has power, but he knocks a lot of people out in exchanges which is a testament to timing and accuracy.
If you're worried about hitting hard though.. IMO the only thing that trains for that kind of explosiveness is many many rounds on the heavy bag.. Just wrap your hands right please... broken bones suck..

yes work on speed and accuracy... knowing where to hit on somebody is something ten times better than having the strongest punch....
i'm 200lbs and bench press about 420lbs.. and i honestly bet some of the guys on here half my size are way better punchers... everybody needs to stop thinking strength is everything. its not.. learn what parts of the body are weak and what type of punch is best to hit that spot.. learning timing, and weak spots are way better than strength...
by definition power= strength+speed ... when it comes to fighting the speed of that formula is the most important part..

I'd say that most people are born with punching power. However, if you are not one of them, you should focus on building explosive power in your hips and strengthen your core. This will help to some degree.

punch with the weight of your body not your arm, a powerful punch is more of a body movement than a arm movement
