cardio is not that intense,
and for self defense there are much better options out there

The lack of contact can be problem esp with all the pads you wear. Kyushin karate would be a better bet. I would look into boxing or muay thai tho. Bjj is a good bet also but going to the ground with multiple attackers is not the best idea how bjj is very effective. Judo with the right dojo is also very effective becouse a good throw on cement can be a fight ender. However if you become heavily reliant on the gi its not super effective however in colder climates a heavy jacket can function as a gi. Taekwondo is better then nothing and can be very effective with the right training and implimenting of its strengths

I was in tae kwon do when I was 6 y/o till I was 13 y/o I am a 2nd degree black belt, but quit to pursue football in jr high. I wish i would have tried a few different martial arts instead of just sticking with one. But it definitly helpe me learn how to fight and counter attack.

Honestly TaeKwonDo is not much in the way of defense as it is a SPORT for competition. It stems from Tang Soo Do which is the original Korean Martial Art.
Tae Kwon Do students are taught how to be quick to get a point in but they usually are not taught power. They teach to use different parts of foot to "slap" a point in instead of proper way if you wanted to kill someone.
This is JUST my humble opinion and experience from 23 years of Tang Soo Do training and competing. I mean NO offense to any Tae Kwon Do students or schools.

I was under the impression that there were multiple styles of Taekwondo like there are multiple styles of karate.
The taekwondo style I studied focused on form and self defense and not on point sparring. The founder of the style also paid the Gracy's to train with him to show him some ground defense which we also learned. GrandMaster Lee also worked with some of the different divisions of state police to show them self defense techniques and pressure point techniques which we also learned.
I agree that I wouldn't study a martial art that was dedicated to point sparring but one that teaches self defense.
I also agree BJJ would be the way to go but it does all boil down to personal preference and BJJ schools aren't as available as standard karate schools are.

I think if you took MT for a month and liked to fight, youd probably beat the TKD guy.
-

believe me you could beat tkd dudes. They are whole bunch of posers and in action they cant do shit , they d only get beaten !!
Just like Japanese Jiujitsu guys !! This guy that i grappled with is black belt in JJ and he was too stubborn to tap out though i tapped him out twice , once with K-lock ( i hurt his shoulder because he didnt tap out when he was supposed to ) then triangle choke. what im trying to say is all those tkd , jj and shit like that are useless you will get somewhere only training boxing , muay thai, bjj.

You wouldn't need to know him. Anyone who actually trains could read his posts and have an idea he is knowledgeable about BJJ. You'd have to be pretty ignorant (in addition to being a douchebag) not to notice and recommend BJJ to someone who does it for a living.
Jujutsu, jiujitsu, or however one chooses to spell it, is of Japanese etymology, as is dojo. There's nothing gay about it. BJJ dojo, BJJ academy, BJJ club, BJJ gym, etc., etc., whatever you want to call it would be acceptable. There's no need to bring your sexual preference into it. What you do in the privacy of your own home is your own business.
Here's a link to a BJJ dojo. Feel free to stop by and tell them what you think of their word choice and be sure to advise them to try it.

BJJ (best to win on the ground)
Freestyle Wrestling (best for ground control)
Muay Thai (best all around stand up)
Boxing (best for the hands)
MMA (putting it all together)
but, all of those have rules... for self defense I would go Krav or something like that...
