i enjoyed the hell out of it.
I think my gassing had alot to do with nerves cuz i swear i have rolled way harder before just not infront of so many people.
In class im the to learn so i dont care about losing, its about learning.
Competition its like All or Nothing.
either way i changed my training.
I do 1 heavy set per exercise 3-7reps max, then after im done i do 3 ciruits at reps of 6-8
then 10-12
then 20-25

not sure where u competed but pulling guard is NOT a takedown.....ive competed in NAGA and several other smaller venues on eastcoast....a takedown is a takedown...pulling guard is just that....pulling guard....i would know, thats all i used to do because my takedowns and takedown defense are GARBAGE CAN...LOL.....

A2theJ...congrats on your experience!!!
adrenaline dump is a huge factor the only way to get over that is...MORE COMPETITIONS!!! You learn so much about yourself via comp's...such a great experience....
you will have ups and downs....i stopped competing when i got tired of paying NAGA prices just to get held down by sandbagging wrestlers....i think the final straw for me was competing in the 2 year and under cat....and losing to a guy who admited to me after the match he had wrestled for 10 years but done judo for like 2 weeks and didnt even know any submissions...he said once he heard what school i trained at he got scared so he just took me down and stalled me for 5 minutes winning 2 nothing for the takedown points...not for 80 dollars...not me...lol
be prepared for it all...and above alllllllllllll else....HAVE FUN....
i cant train anymore due to several injuries and mentally it has destroyed me...enjoy it while you can!!!!

Did u hear about Roger at the Worlds 9 subs all Gi chokes from mount.
Cass sound it was boring he would sweep everyone and mount and then Gi choke, he said its amazing how Dominant someone can be at the level, and how good it is too come into a tournament with a gameplan and how to move towards it in any position

Yeah Roger's amazing. He's becoming one of the if not the G.O.A.T. They say once he gets mount its only a matter of time till he gets the sub. One of his students was saying that he practices that exact posistion and that choke/chokes all the time. He gets mount, then uses his hip to push his elbow, which makes it easier for him to get the 1st hand(lets say right hand) in the collar. Then he bases out on his left forearm over top of his opponents head, and sticks just his thumb in the collar on the other side. Then he brings the arm up over the face to the neck, and finishes the choke. His student says the pressure, and his insane grip are enough to make you want to tap before he even leans forward to finish. He's destroying people with very basic jiujitsu, which is nice to see, especially for guys who arent acrobatic.I really like the way that Roger,Kron etc play BJJ

Im not convinced that Roger is the GOAT till he and Xande go at it. Sucks he was hurt this year. He was at the comp though.
BTW, a few of Rogers wins were by ezikel as well. But nonetheless, he was very impressive.
Everyone knew what he was going to do, and no one could stop it. I think he only got 4 points scored on him in all 9 fights. One guy got a takedown, and the other got the sweep. Then Roger swept back.
It was a great tournament overall. Allian ce has some loud motherfvckers man...
I was at the tourn all weekend. Had some young guys REALLY step up. I had a fantastic time. Shame you couldnt come down AJ.

The surprise for me was watching Roger finish all his fights from mount. Everyone knew what he was gonna do, but he did it anyway.
I was hanging with Galvao for while on that Saturday. We were talking about Roger and if we had a shot against him. haha Hes a very nice guy man.

i talked to Marco's guess he got screwed tapped his 1st opponent and 2nd but ref didnt see it and gave dude the fight and guess what he was Gracie Barra. what do u know.
I like getting mount and doing the ezekiel choke but if they buck u back to guard u dont have the sub so wouldnt collar chokes be better?

i think for myself, the collar choke from mount is the way to go.Like you said if you get reversed, you can lock up the full guard and have a better chance.Roger is a different animal, and once he gets mount he can pretty much do whatever he pleases.I thought the 1st match Roger had was also the most competitive.I dont remember who it was though. The guy almost pulled off a sweep, but ended up mounted and choked obviously.I'll see if i can find it.

the nerves your talking about are real, but its different when you get out there and are actually competing. its seems like you kick it up one r two gears that you never even knew you had ya know, and so does your competitor. My thing to you would be to try to stay as calm as you can, and as you know dont count on your strength as much, technique son.

aww you do gi bjj lol dont like that stuff ha. hell of a workout though.

U may dislike it but know that in MMA all the top guys train or trained GI, coming up to a fight they may not but all of them at the top level trained GI, Penn,Gsp,Fedor,Anderson.etc
-
06-20-2009, 11:15 PM #72
^ Actually Fedor didnt train BJJ.
But he does do Sambo. And thats with a GI so...
Mount isnt my position anyway bro. I like to go side control to north south. Even half guard.
Far side armbars, north south chokes, along with Cross collar chokes, and D'arce chokes from half guard and turtle postion. I usually score with the takedowns. Thats my bread and butter.
I didnt do so great recently. Still upset about it...

I dont much like training with a Gi when I do any martial art. However I see the value of starting off and learning the fundamentals. Since I train MMA just for fun and to help the guys train for their fights we train mostly without a gi just like in the fight. I have to admit that using the gi has great training and practical uses. I got my drunk ass saved a year or two ago in a bar by applying a choke I learned from the standing position from the first placed I trained Gi based BJJ.
-

as much as i hated Gi as i progressed, i still think it is ESSENTIAL for developing the fundamentals.....offensively the handles allow you to get that first submission a little easier...the more you get it, the closer you get to being able to put that move in your arsenal......defensively, once you are used to the TECHNICAL and PROPER way to get out of an attack with a Gi on....well, its a lot of fun when you take that thing off for the first time! Ive been off the mat since 06' and if i ever went back, id be wearing my Gi again until i got my game back....
-

I also don't like training with the gi because I have seen many people grow very dependent on it. At my last school there were two guys that could beat me maybe half the time when we rolled with the gi, but when I took the gi off I could beat them every time we rolled because all of their hand holds went away.
I think its good to start with a gi, I did for my first 4-5 years, but after that I think its very important that you learn to roll without it. I win about 70-80% of the time with leg locks and rear naked choke.

1. This is one old thread :P
2. I kinda have to disagree with you gunslinger...anyone can win at no gi...lets you be sloppy. If you can spar with a noose around your kneck then you know you can win without one.
-

I understand where you are coming from here but "anyone can win at no gi" come on man, give people like Eddy Bravo some credit. You may want to rethink that statement a little bit.
Rolling no gi might let you slip out of a sloppy arm bar or a cheap but its more realistic. I can get an arm bar from guard with one hand if the guy has a gi for me to grab. On the other hand, if its no gi, I really have to have total control over his arm to get it or he slips out.
I also don't see many people wearing them in the summers here in the south.
