"Deadlifts will train the muscles to overcome your body's inertia to accelerate, and they'll allow you to overcome an opponents momentum in contact sports such as football, rugby and wrestling, in which you need to stop or take down an opponent."
" For increasing absolute strength , 5-6 sets of 3-5 reps 85-90% of your one rep max; for developing explosiveness, 3-4 sets of 5-6 reps with 50-60% of your one rep max. "
- Robert T Williams , division fitness and performance specialist for EAS in Columbus, Ohio

I tend to do one or the other. squats for a few months and then deadlifts for a few months. trying to squeeze in both has always felt like a little too much with all the different sports that i play.
