    Portein Powders Overrated?

Back in the days when i first started building i use to live on this stuff. Maybe 3-4 shakes a day... Now i usually just have one (PWO) and rely on whole foods through out the day... So i decided to take it out of my diet and see if it makes a real difference.

How many of you don't use and protein powder? What do you do for a PWO..
I was thinking some liquid egg whites and simple carbs?

    Let hear some opinions

I only use it PWO and thats it. So that is approx 45/300 grams of protein out of shakes daily. So the PWO shake is really an aperetif for my real wholesome meal.
Also, yes I feel much better eating real food versus shakes.

I used protein shakes for 10 years before I reralized that they didn't help at all. Now I eat more real food and my gains are better.

I drink some chocolate milk PWO with some egg whites.

I noticed once i switched too eating more whole foods than protein shakes, my muscles felt alot fuller and my strength did go up.

From then on i havent seen the neccessity of any kind of protein shake or protein bar to be in my diet.

maybe ill have one as a meal if I'm one the road that day for work and I have no time, but hardly ever....

I believe in solid foods all the way...5 meals and 2 shakes a day over here!!!!

so if you have time why not switch the last meal to a whole food.

    - i'm going to take out all my protein powder for 10 wks, replace with whole food and see what's the difference.

PWO and use them to flavour oatmeal, I will be dropping them from my oatmeal next bulk but adding a pre workout shake as I have read a study lately showing the benefits of carb/whey pre workout.
My shakes are used in conjunction with 6 whole food meals a day, they are a supplement not a substitute.

I dont how they can be overrated, it is after all just protein...the only ones i use are 100% whey, 100% casein, 100% egg powders...its just protein, i dont think proteins overrated

Many people use whey with flax oil as a meal replacement with great results.

Whey is proven to have good health benefits and a great amino acid profile. Even the stay young crowds which are not BB’ers are into whey.

Sometimes I think people are playing “follow the leader” when they preach NO shakes.

I believe if you don’t supplement with a whey shake before and after work out you are missing out. A jolt of protein is essential at those times.

lets not forget that despite the argument about "whole food Vs Whey" that whey protein is hugely bioavailable, has an excellent amino acid profile and has little fat or sugar. So i would not call it over rated.

and I've had such positive results with no shotgun that I doubt ill replace it for a shake....

i stopped using shakes when i ran out of my last bag of protein about 5-6 months ago. because im a broke college student, i never got around to buying more, however, i think my gains are a lot leaner, and there is a lot less bloating without any shakes. i would like to get some more when i can afford it though solely for pwo.

Protien powders are an option. And options are a luxury in life. I think powders have come along way (quality, mixing ability, taste, etc.) thanks to time and competition.

    When I rank them:

    Whole foods come first.

    Powders come second.

Protein powder is not overrated. You purchase it knowing that it's nothing more than a protein substitute. It is what it is and by no means is there a guarantee that it will make you bigger or stronger.

Let's not forget the biggest thing whey powder's got going for it.. Price. It's cheaper per gram of protien than just about any other protien source there is.

^^ agreed.. A single whey protein shake can have up to 48g of protein.. Whereas a 5ounce chicken breast only has 24g of protein. Not to mention the convenience of drinking a shake that would take u aprox. 1min to prepare and cooking aprox. 20min.. So, I do not agree that protein shakes are overrated, not if used moderately within a diet..

So you use them for convience?

You can't say that a protein shake is more valuable than a chicken breast, if so then why don't you rely on shakes for your diet?

I agree that shakes are siometimes good for convience but my question is if you can make the time to consume most of your protein and nutrients from whole foods rather than a shakes. Wouldn't it be better?
