    Pre workout carbs experiment,

In two weeks I will be starting my lean bulking cycle. I decided after reading so much info on pre workout carbs + BCAAs that I would do a little experiment and try some different carb sources. I will be using a glucometer to measure levels and I will be reporting back on how I felt it affected my workout.

    It will look like this

    week 1 dex + BCAA
    week 2 honey + BCAA
week 3 powdered oats + BCAA
week 4 blackstrap mollases + BCAA
week 5 Waxy maize starch + BCAA
    week 6 oats + Dex + BCAA

the only point I am still thinking on is the ammount of carbs I should consume. I was thinking 40g of carbs (obviously I would weigh each one so that they gave the correct ammount of carbs). Opinions?

Interesting and thorough. Good luck, PB.

If I had to choose for myself it would be week 3 or week 6. I see myself crashing during the tail end of a workout on, say, the WMS example. I prefer WMS for post workout though.

    PB,

I have been playing around with pre workout carbs for a couple months now. Thus far, I have tried dex, bagel, and large flake oats...all with whey protein about 30-45 minutes prior to working out.

Primal hit the nail on the head with respect to the crash..at least for me..I dropped the dex after about two weeks and moved onto bagel which I have now moved to PWO.

I now have just over half a cup of large flake raw oats, a scoop of whey protein, and raw egg whites mixed up 30-45 mins pre workout...I then have BCAAs which I drink throughout the workout (10 grams). I have found the 30-40 carb range has been ideal for me...keeping in mind I am just over 180lbs right now.

Obviously it all depends on the person, their routine, intensity, etc., but I would say that 40 grams would be a good starting point, quantitatively...after which the necessary adjustments could me made.

Either way, I am looking forward to hearing about your results...Good luck.

Very thorough. I'm also very interested in the results of your "experiment". Where can you get a glucometer? Thats precision.

all chemists sell them here very cheaply, I might get my dads old one as he is diabetic and gets new ones free all the time.
If anyone else has any interesting carb sources they would like me to include or any other ideas just let me know.

its not interesting but why not some bananas or a apple? i think they are excellent fuel for workout. maybe mix the fruit with some of the other choices you have. just a thought.

I would be so kindly thankfull if you added bananas to your experiment. I think a lot of members would. Seems like a lot of us eat them.

    Thanks PB

thanks for the ideas guys. I will be adding banana as a carb source. I will blend it with water as all carb sources in this experiment will be drunk.

I use fruit pre-workout as well. Usually an apple though. I can't imagine the GI is too much different, and the carb source is fructose for both so we'll call it even I guess.

I would like to see some form of rice used in a small amount pre-workout as well if possible.

which sort of rice would you suggest, remember it must be able to be blended in shake as i am avoiding any whole foods. All carbs blended with water and BCAAs

Oh yeah, I forgot you're blending... In that case, don't worry about the rice. I don't wish to put you through such torture of drinking a rice shake...

If you do want to try rice I know most of the health food stores have a rice powder available in the bulk section. Maybe even cream of wheat or cream of rye would be another choice. Goodluck. I'm liking this thread already! Cheers

    Hey DNoMAC,

Have you ever tried any of those pink lady apples? If not, I highly recommend them. They are sweet as can be!

not started yet. i have the glucometer ect but i am waiting for PCT to complete so i can give reliable and honest feedback. At the moment hormones are all over the place And i am using a variety of compounds so it would cloud the experiment.

why not simple carbs + EAA? there are many studies that show this combo is far superior to anything else pre/intra workout. i would post them, but i'm being a little lazy lol, but check it out.
