Define "eats really good" and "does cardio like a freak".

yeah... clean calories are one thing, but to lose weight you have to reduce some too. cardio like a freak.. running 10 miles a day does nothing if it takes you 2 hours. personally, i'd aim for 3 miles in 24 min maybe? idk whats good for girls. also, interval training and a variety of workouts helps. lifting doesn't really burn many calories compared to other things

My point was "eating really good" and "doing cardio like a freak" means different things to different people. I cant even begin to count how many people state they eat a clean diet then when they post it I cant tell if they are serious or kidding. Basically it comes down to one thing, short of a thyroid condition, IF SHE IS NOT LOSING WEIGHT SHE IS NOT IN A CALORIE DEFICIT. She can change that be expending more or eating less.
I disagree with the statement that lifting does not burn calories compared to other things. 30-40 minutes of intense weight training will burn a ton of calories and keep your heart rate very elevated. It will also increase lean muscle mass which helps burn calories the other 23 1/2 you are not at the gym. If you want to find fat people (especially skinny fat people) look inside any of the aerobics rooms at a local gym.

my great advice based upon the little that was provided is that her diet is clearly not in check. Fireguy basically summed it up yet you had to bring up different cardio when thats probably not the problem and the diet is.
>Testy post up a diet with macro's + your friend's BMR and activity level then people can help.

alot of bad advice here. run 10 miles at a 12 minute mile everyday, its gonna have a huge impact - thats alot of running. lifting doesnt burn calories compared to other things? thats just really wrong.
to the poster, have her diet evaluated by a professional, someone who gets people ready for contests. that will iron things out.

+1...
Lifting is one of the most intense caloric-hungry things a person... male or female can have in ones workout plan.
Just because a female uses weights does not mean she is going to gain mass. Thats all diet. If her diet is strict and in check... a nice sturdy lifting program with a good 40 minute a day cardio will do wonders.
In fact, heavier lifting for a female is suggested because of the increase in metabolic rate. Calories are burned through out the day, not just during the workout.
Many people think that a workout plan should vary from male to female... This is wrong. Due to the fact that although the genetic makeup of a gender varies with hormones... metabolic process is basically identical.

Also... change up exercises from a day to day basis. What i like to do is split my cardio up daily... ill do 45 minutes of cardio... 15 minutes on bike, treadmill, elliptical on one day... hiit cardio the following day... mix it up. Keep your body guessing.

Woman always want do do all theses super light reps because "they don't want to get all big and muscle bound." What they don't realize is, gaining muscle is a long, slow, and difficult process. It requires a lot more than lifting heavy weights a couple of times a week.
Heavy resistance training is hands down, the best thing you can do to lose fat - besides you diet of course =)

Does she even keep her heartrate at high intensity or low intensity or does she even pay attention to this?
Define this "diet".

I actually read on this forum that even an intense workout like Arnold's only burnt about 150 cals, not sure how accurate this is but thought I would pass the info on. Not to take away from resistance training, it def. increases your BMR and lean body mass, but I can burn far more calories with cardio. I believe the key to lean body mass is an effective combo of resistance training and cardio.

I agee with you 100%! I am not knocking resistance training at all. I just think that people have the misconception that they are burning a lot of calories with a resistance training session. Like you pointed out it is the after-effects of the increased BMR that kicks the calorie burning into gear.
