Why is food protein better than shake protein?
I keep reading that you should get your protein via food instead of shakes when possible. I'm quite curious why. I mean most good shakes have low fat and low carbs and multiple types of proteins (egg, whey, etc). And they have all the bcaa's and aminos.
I don't really see the point of saying you should not drink a shake if you can eat food instead, especially if you only are drinking 1-2 shakes a day.

Post workout use a shake but for other times of the day use whole food sources. You don't need protein to get into the bloodstream within 20 mins during most parts of the day. Whole food sources will provide a steady stream of AAs over a period of several hours and will have nutrients not commonly found in bulk protein powders. Thermic effect will also be higher in whole food sources.

If I'm hungry I'll cook food
If I'm not hungry and/or lazy I'll go with a shake
#1 = That I give my body the right nutrients
Shakes are at times alot more convenient than a meal .. Depends on the situations
I also cant stomach anything first thing in the morning so I go with a shake instead

food has vitamins and nutrients.. and some benefits we may not even know about. shakes are a great way to get protein, i think a protein is only as good as the amino acids that make it up(how useful they are to me and my goals) and whey is by far the most bioavailible protein there is and has strong BCAA profile so good for bodybuilder. i drank about 3-4 shakes a day when i was cutting last and got a blood test and urine test and liver values and kidney values were only High-Normal and i was running tren ! (blood test was done a few weeks after cycle) so dont be afraid to drink shakes. do what fits ya schedule just get all your macros!!

thats what im wondering, if it is a quality shake with short and long release proteins, and all the vitamins, etc - why can it not be used as a meal replacement?

it takes more calories to digest solid food than it does liquids
Shakes have their place, but should NOT be over used. Plus a lot of shakes are full of processed chemicals and sugars that your body really doesn't need.Last edited by T-MOS; 03-29-2009 at 08:07 PM.

Which is why you make your own shakes from scratch I'll leave my calorie burning for the gym, the kitchens for the nutrition side of things IMO

Why do you want to do that?
1). Thats how food allergies form
2). You don't get the same nutrients you find in foods, healthy fats (ex: cla, 0megas) I don't care how much fortifying you do to your protein powder.
3). Here I'll restate this in numbering format so maybe you'll be more receptive. The thermic effect is no where near the same as whole foods.
4). Natural source of creatine inside whole foods like red meats
5). It's a supplement, not meant to be your only protein source. Expensive and unneccisary.
6). Depending on the brand it can be a poor source of some key AA's which is why it's good to variety.

Oh yah add phytonutrients to that list of things you won't find in a protein shake.

nah lol
you just seemed to get kinda mad over one retort to one example you gave.
I can see and agree with all you other points. I never said i wanted to replace all or even the majority of mine with a shake though, as shakes taste like butt (as i only mix mine with water). But due to time and money I take 2 a day, but it is still under 1/3 of my total intake.

I wouldn't say limit it to only one shake a day. I'll have a whey protein shake post-workout while I'm on my way home from the gym and preparing my meal. But I also always have a casein shake and chicken breast straight before I go to bed.
I don't think there's anything wrong with having a whey protein shake directly after a workout while you're preparing a meal and also having a casein shake along side some food protein before bed.

i have no exp with casein.. dont see why i would need to when there are lean beefs like london broil that would do a better job over night imo..
-

I'm not saying to just have the casein shake by itself, I always have it along side a chicken breast or occasionally a steak. But personally, as someone with a fast metabolism, I did start seeing slight differences when I started using casein before bed along side food protein.
