so i'm deep into keto but wanted to have couple of drinks tomorrow night. i know vodka has no carbs as apposed to scotch and bourbon, so would a couple vodka and diet soda's knock me out of keto?

Alcohol really isnt good idea when trying to lose weight, especially if you eat anything with it. You have to ask yourself what do you want more?

I'm all for everything in moderation, but to me a cut is a cut and nothing will let me stray from it.

I understand this mate, but what i want to know is if vodka would actually knock me out of keto or not. i guess the only way is to use the ketostix as a reference..

Alcohol can give a false reading on ketostix

Unflavoured Vodka has zero carbs. All the calories come from alcohol. Alcohol is metabolised differently by the dody to carbs. Your body will burn these calories before fat calories. So your fat burning/keto will be blunted for a period of time, in theory.

Question? What's the point of a couple of drinks? You can't really taste vodka in a mixer unless minimal mixer and a couple of vodka's ain't gonna get you drunk. And diet soda's contain citric acid which can knock you out of keto. Up to you but I wouldn't.

Stem is pretty much right on point.
Alcohol will immediately halt keto - you will remain out of ketosis for the length of time it takes for the alcohol to be burned (approx 1 drink per hour).Your body will then return to ketosis. Its not as bad as carbs as there will not be any glycogen stored in the case of vodka or scotch. Beer is a different story.
Slippery slope as you have to watch your mixers as was pointed out - tonic contains sugar - citric acid is an issue for some ....
Have a couple drinks on your carb load day if you insist on drinking - that would be my advice if alcohol consumption is a must.
If you dont mind the hours out of ketosis then choose Your drink wisely.
One more thing keep in mind with the "buzz" you potentially lower you level of discipline and could potentially end up at some diner scarfing down eggs hash browns toast and pancakes.
    BTW -Good post Stem....

Its pretty straightforward - you drink , ketosis is almost immediately halted. Once your body metabolizes alcohol- you return to ketosis. It not like glycogen stores are replenished and so on - so it doesnt take time to re enter. This of course when drinking things like vodka or scotch-not beer or wine.
The interdepedant difference is soley based on how quickly the individual metabolizes the alcohol.
As far as citric acid/diet soda interestingly enough this doesnt effect everyone.

As for checking it with the ketostix, it won't be accurate. The stix measure a specific ketone which is chemically similar to one of the breakdown products of alcohol metabolism. So, you may get a false positive result.

alcohol is excreted in your urine and it will give you a false positive on a ketostix test. If you were eating all the carbs in the words and drank 400mL of vodka that stick would look exactly the same. That doesnt mean you are not currently in ketosis, but dont get to excited about it
