I took 4+ months off from lifting this summer while I was feeling terrible, before I started TRT. Now that I'm on the juice I went back to lifting and the amazing thing is my strength is still at 90% of my max if not 100%. The only issue is I benched this week and my shoulders are KILLING ME.
I've benched a higher weight when I was younger, like 9 years ago with out any pain. I don't understand why my shoulders are hurting now all the sudden. I've been trying to study how powerlifers bench with their elbows tucked but I don't think I could actually do it yet, it's confusing to me.
I think I'm going to take some time off of barbell bench (even though I really want to hit 250+ this year!) and just do DB press for awhile.

You've probably jumped up in weight too quickly without allowing the tendons & ligaments to strengthen adequately. Shoulders are a tricky spot for serious lifters. Old injuries can flare up at any time if you piss them off I've found. I'm often working around a sore shoulder more often then I'd like. What helps with me is a cycle of NSAIDs like Advil or Aleve taken strictly @ twice daily for a week or two plus an ice pack for periods of 20 mins while watching TV at night. Definitely reduce the weight to a point of only minor and/or no discomfort. Give it 3-4 weeks. If not better, go see an Orthopedic Surgeon to determine if you have any surface tears/full-thickness tears of the Rotator Cuff. I too cannot bench with my shoulders tucked in as you described. I've heard that this technique is less stressful on the shoulders. Substituting with DB presses or Hammer Strength machines can also help sometimes...

Thanks for the advice APIs. I've thought about seeing a doctor but they always tell me the same thing "oh your leg hurts when you lift? just don't lift!" I've always wondered if they would tell me the same thing if I told them it hurts when I breathe lol.
It's been over 3 days since I benched and I think my shoulders are about 80% back to normal. I have been lifting everyday this week and they certainly haven't got worse. I have some prescription 750mg aleve for my knees that I can use if it gets too bad. Definitely taking a break from bench unfortunately..
I've had shoulder pain like this before this year from benching, and it always heals within a week just never this bad before. Makes me wonder what's happening though, like why it hurts then heals. Or if I'm doing permanent damage.

I am a big fan of dropping the flat barbell press and replacing it with the dumbells. you have to invest some money into heavy DB's but it makes all the difference. Still do barbell inclines with no pain. whatever works and whatever avoids the pain
