    High hemoglobin

    Hi all,

    61 year old
    Got BW back and…….

    Hemoglobin is 18.1 (13.2-17.1)
    Hematocrit is 51.4 (38.5-50)
    MCH is 33.1 (27-33)

Should I donate whole blood or power reds?

    Thanks

    Whole blood should do it.

What is your current protocol? I normally only need to donate when I'm over my trt dose.

    Those numbers look pretty good.

Anyhow, whole blood should do the trick.

How did they measure at the donation center? With a sensor or did they actually take blood and test that?

Finger stick and a meter. Kind of like using a glucometer but checking Hgb levels

That seems less accurate than sending to the lab? That would explain the different readings.

Yes sir, it's a quick and dirty. Probably accurate enough for their purposes, but not quite as good as what you get with a CBC. I guess they're mainly screening for anemia because I've never been turned away for high Hgb.

My wife had a similar experience with her newest glucometer. She checked it with glucometer just before they pulled for serum glucose. She had almost a 20 mg/dL difference between her new glucometer and test strips vs. the glucose from her labs.

Wildly, sometimes pricking your other finger yields a different outcome.
