Here are a couple of pictures from this years nationals, unfortunately I didn't place as high as I would of hoped but I can't complain, looking at the pictures everyone that beat me deserved there spot. I just was not big enough across the back and through the shoulders.
It would be great to get some feed back from you more experienced guys, as when it comes to judging yourself sometimes its hard to be subjective, all comments are taken with good faith be they bad or good, my opinion is I just was not big enough up top.
The day wasn't a total loss though still managed to place 2nd at a state level. Im the one in the green trunks no.225

The only thing I can see that I'd focus on would be back thickness, traps a bit larger and quad definition. Now this is solely based on the above pics. Your structure and symetry and stances are great. With quads I'd like to see more muscle separation in the upper region.
You look great. Just love to see older guys still kicking ass. Nice work.

Had you had a little more deltoid I think you would have won the show. It would be nice as kel said to see a little more separation in the upper region of your legs but man you killed it. you look fantastic. I wish my calves looked as half as good as yours do. You done well man, nothing to be disappointed about at all.

Hey everyone thank you very much for your comments, pretty much spot on according to what I thought as well.
Obviously this is not my first comp but in my gym im the only one that competes, so its really hard to get a objective view as most people are so nice at my gym they only pay complements.
That's where you guys come in and your opinions are so much appreciated.
I really worked on my symmetry this year and did improve it but at this level it has to be a whole package. In Australia the under 90kg (198lb) is the most competitive class we have.
Unfortunately years of football have ruined my things due to the massive amount of corks I got into the upper thighs which have split the muscle and caused scar tissue and lumpy muscle structure, but hey nothing is impossible lets see what shear determination and will power can accomplish this year.
Again thank you to everyone who commented its really appreciated.

Sorry mate please excurse my Australian sang, it means when someone one drives there knee into your quad as it happens in contact sport, we don't wear protection in our contact sports yet, but I fear its coming due to public liability insurance claims. You could imagine if your got you elbow ( ie knee ) and in the courses of a game you drove your elbow into a muscle at full force, it causes what we in Aus call a cork, as I understand it the muscle fibres spilt due to the trauma and caused, scar tissue forms causing a less than perfect appearance. In my case it affects my upper thighs and make them appear lumpy and no serrations, but I take that on board as I know that I can work on it.
PS I agree with you there is know way we can let all these young guys have all the fun.
Buy the way your avi rocks, Stop posting pictures of my wife LOL.
I wish.

You killed it!!! I would just say some more thickness in the lower part of your taps and you would have won it all. How old was the person that placed 1st? BTW you are a freak and Im sure you do not see guys your age look like you often. I sure dont at least. Great work !!

Hey mate thank you for your kind words, I would have to guess but I would say the guys who beat me would be in their 30's tops. It was funny standing there at the weigh in my wife said to me those guys are talking about you, she said they recognized you from last year and one said yeah that's him that old guy he came in shredded last year and he is 48.
I suppose that is a complement but I like yours more, its nice to be called a freak at this age, I have taken on board all advice and have already put in a plan for next year, I have a sticker on the fridge which reads, Remember the taste of disappointment that second place brought you, we don't want to taste it this year.
I will use this to fuel my progress towards a better package next year and if I don't win then I will try again and again until I do. Its only over when you give up.
Cheers.

Thanks mate, im sure if you put your mind to it you can and maybe even better, all it takes is the desire the will and the knowledge, sounds complex but not really. Just train intensely, manage your recovery as best you can, remember what you eat today walks and talks tomorrow but still have a life and go out to dinner be social.
But above all enjoy what you do and do it with passion, it then becomes pleasurable to push limits reach boundary's and break through platoes.
Sounds like a lot of rhetoric right but not for me its always been like this for this last 30plus years, I love this sport and whether I compete or not im always happy when I walk out of the gym after a good workout.
Cheers.

If I ever looked like that and had a picture ! I would carry it on me and when people told me I looked good I would whip the pic out and say "Look at how good I looked here !!!". Well done and deserved !

Whats up mate,
Just came across the tread and damn FREAK definitely fits the bill for you.
I am a novice when it comes to bodybuilding but have judged a few shows so for whatever its worth here is my input.
Its of course hard to tell from a few pics on the web, but I would look toward the delts and some trap work, you can easily go overboard IMHO on traps so be careful there but (again this is my opinion) its hard to overdo delts. Also maybe some work in the upper arms but this should come with the delts.
The other thing that is an easy one is your tan, it may just be the lighting but you seem to be the lightest in the lineup which in my opinion is not a good thing.
OK enough for the critique, you are an absolute beast for any age for 48 you are flat out phenomenal. Major respect on all the hard work you have put in it damn well shows.
FFM
PS thanks for the inspiration, I am 58 and was hoping to compete in masters physique but since suffering a setback have been out of the gym for a couple of months, till just last week. Seeing what you have achieved has definitely motivated me to try to continue on that course since if someone at 48 can transform and maintain their body to the degree you have, I see no reason why I should not be able to make the comparatively small changes needed to compete in masters physique.Last edited by Far from massive; 11-16-2013 at 09:48 PM.

Thanks mate for your comments.
Wow what can I say thank you very much, yes im a little proud how this picture turned out, thanks for taking the time to comment.
Hey mate thanks for your input and you certainly nailed it, I didn't mention what a balls up the comp was because I didn't want it to sound like sour grapes from a losing competitor, but the fact of the matter was you could not hear any of the division being called, so poor was the P.A set up.
When I realized my division was on stage I only had time to quickly pin my number on and rush on stage, what you see in the pictures is me without the final coat of tan on and no pump up time, yes stone cold. This is not my first comp so I take full responsibility for it, but the place was so disorganized it was impossible to keep track of divisions as if they were called you could not here them, that's why im the lightest in the line up and no doubt it didn't do me any favours.
Your comments about my Traps/Delts and arms are spot on and in keeping with my own thoughts, its also valuable info from someone who has sat at the judges table, just what I was after.
On a personal level this sport never ceases to amaze me, here we are half way around the world and you receive such nice comments as yours and other members on this board, its very humbling to get these from complete strangers.
Im glad I have inspired you and I agree at our age we can still show the young guys a thing or two, just kidding guys didn't mean to offend the younger brigade but here in Australia we have a big bunch of young kids that want everything yesterday without putting in the effort, you get the odd one who is willing to work for it but not many.
I would encourage you to peruse your goal of competing in the masters as at our age its not to late and can be done 100%. If I can be of any help with your journey it would be my pleasure to answer any questions you may have, even though looking around this board there is a wealth of knowledgeable members on here.
I wish you good luck with your goal and thank your for your kind words.
Cheers.

So here we are again 12 weeks out from our Australian Titles, I hope you guys don't mind me reviving this old thread I really do enjoy taking this journey with you.
Im posting a picture up of me today at 104kg which I think is about 230lbs in your terms, not the best picture with regards to body building but hey I have 12 weeks left and am comfortable this is a good platform to launch from.
I would have like to have added more muscle mass especially across the top of my shoulders but that's not the cards I been dealt, the plan from here is simple, one condition. two condition and finally condition.

Big difference. It looks like you took the year to add some mass. Shoulders look great.
We're almost the same age. Wish I had that kind of size.

Hey mate thanks for stopping buy to read my thread, I don't know about easy but I give it my best shot.
Thanks for rooting for me, you make me laugh, I know what it means because my best mate spent some time in scotts dale Arizona so I got up to speed with the lingo, but in Aus it means something totally different.
I plan on putting up some pictures every 4 weeks so it would be great if I could have your feedback good or bad
Again thank you.

Not really. Look here (but see the more recent pics toward the bottom after the first-ever-cut-in-my-life) Bodyfat estimates?
I am nowhere near being in good enough shape (size, condition) to step on a stage. I do not think that I am even within 5 years of doing so, and at my age (turn 47 in a little over a month) I sort of think that was something I should have aimed for when I was younger if I wanted to do it.
I am just a recreational gym rat.
Anyway, your pics are an inspiration to me.
