Trans-Atlantic Tunnel?????
http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence...teractive.html
A magnetically levitated train could theoretically take you from New York to London in 54 minutes. But you'd have to go 5,000 mph through a 3,100-mile-long tunnel that was itself floating in the Atlantic Ocean.

Sounds like some engineers wet dream. Would be awsome but I cant imagine the price for such a thing.

things like this are funny. remember those articles from the 1950s-60s saying we'd all live on the moon in the year 2000 and eat food pills.....
or that we'd all have flying cars.
in 30-40 years they'll laugh at retarded people from 2007 who thought trans-atlantic tunnels were gonna be a reality

People thought that in the 50-60's? I don't know very much at all about science and technology, I wish I did. But for some reason, I looked at this article, and assumed it was possible. Is it really that impossible?

I dunno if its impossible..its just impossible to predict things to come in 30-40 years.
like 30-40 years ago they were predicting all kindsa shit that hasnt come true, and completely missed loads of things that have.

I'd love to know who's going to pony up the cash for 3,000 miles of concrete, steel, fiber optic cable, etc. and just how unrealistically high the price would be for a ticket on that train ($200 each way is hardly economical). It would take the GDP of an entire country to just get this project started and hire the engineers, service personnel, architects, etc.
A larger problem would be servicing the tunnel. How would you staff personnel along 3,000 miles? What would happen in the event of a leak? Would you have pumps that could evacuate 3,000 miles of ocean water once the hole was patched? Who "owns" the tunnel since it's in international waters and who can profit from it?Last edited by Vinlander; 03-29-2007 at 07:27 PM.
