Sharpton Denies insulting Mormons
Sharpton Denies Questioning Romney's Belief in God During Debate
Wednesday, May 09, 2007
BOSTON — The Rev. Al Sharpton, who recently urged that radio host Don Imus be fired for making a racially insensitive remark, said in a debate that "those of us who believe in God" will defeat Republican Mitt Romney for the White House. But Sharpton denied he was questioning the Mormon's own belief in God.
Rather, the New York Democrat said he was contrasting himself with Christopher Hitchens, the atheist author he was debating at the time.
"As for the one Mormon running for office, those who really believe in God will defeat him anyways, so don't worry about that; that's a temporary situation," Sharpton said Monday during a debate with Hitchens at the New York Public Library's Beaux-Arts headquarters.

The comment was first reported Tuesday in a blog on The New York Times's Web site.
The Romney campaign, which has been wary of campaign trail criticism of Romney's faith, jumped on the Sharpton comment. If elected, Romney would be the first Mormon to serve as president.
"It is terribly disheartening and disappointing to hear Reverend Sharpton offer such appalling comments about a fellow American's faith," said Romney spokesman Kevin Madden. "America is a nation of many faiths and common values, and bigotry toward anyone because of their beliefs is unacceptable."
IMO:
What a blatant and deliberate insult to a mainstream religion. Sharpton was the loudest voice condeming Imas for his nonsensical comment about nappy headed ho's....... It seems his hypocrisy has no bounds.Last edited by singern; 05-09-2007 at 09:11 AM.

From what I've seen of Al Sharpton he is opposed to same sex marriages. Plus he has his own church that he pastors on Sunday. He is no different than Haggert, the former leader of the Evangelical church. Nothing but a hypocrite!

Again, this doesnt mean a whole lot. He is a civil rights activist. He is a social injustice blabbermouth. He is not a religious fanatic. I'll see if I can find a sermon of his, but I'll bet it will be awfully light on Biblical content (if it is in there, it will be prooftexted) and heavy on social issues.

Obviously you're a Limbaugh fan, but he has proven just as devisive as Sharpton. He says outlandish things, expresses clearly bigotted ideals, and has contradicted himself often (especially with his disdain for drug addicts until he admitted being one). Seems like a similar person to Sharpton to me!!!

Have you ever actually listened to a Rush radio show...not just the sound bites that the mainstreem media uses to mischaracterize him?

C'mon Logan, you can't be making a excuses for this hypocrite, are you? Look I'm not a Sharpton fan and I think that I have proven that. I look forward to seeing Sharpton on Hannity and Colmes. And since you gave Limbaugh props for being a forthcoming hypocrite, you gotta give Sharpton props for going on a very right leaning show, right?

Rush isn't a hypocrite? What about the fact that he demonized drug addicts then expected sympathy after he admitted to being one himself. Is that not the epitomy of a hypocrite?Last edited by BgMc31; 05-11-2007 at 05:59 PM.

Well -- watching the show was a waste of time. The Imus producer was NOT a good debater -- plus, Sharpton is one slippery dude.

All I'm saying is I don't think anyone can make a totally informed decision about anything without doing the proper research of all angles of an argument. This is why I do consider myself an in***endant with democratic tendencies. Because I don't blindly follow what anyone says and occasionally I side with republicans on some issues.

Im not even close to being an in***endant. Im a very conservative Republican and you could go right down the two parties platforms to see why for me. I have to admit I do have some libertaian views (i.e. the war on drugs) but I cant see myself ever voting for one unless they had a chance...and I would never vote for a Democrat, at least not at the state or federal level.
