Troops in Iraq get safer vehicle

By Tom Vanden Brook, USA TODAY
    http://www.usatoday.com/news/washing...tes-mrap_N.htm

WASHINGTON — The Pentagon will phase out its armored Humvees in Iraq and Afghanistan and send in vehicles that better withstand roadside bomb blasts, Defense Secretary Robert Gates said Wednesday.
Replacing the Humvee, the military's main troop-transport vehicle, will be the Mine Resistant Ambush Protected Vehicle, known as an MRAP. Military officials say the new vehicles provide twice as much protection against improvised explosive devices (IEDs), which cause 70% of all U.S. casualties in Iraq.

Armored Humvees were "the best we had," Gates said. "Now we have something better, and we're going to get that to the field as best we can."

    IMO:
Way past due, and what a cool looking vehicle.

Dude, those vehicles are costing over a million dollars apiece. When I ***loyed my Humvee didn't even have doors, no joke. We had to fabricate doors with discarded metal and then welded some hinges on. It was pretty cool looking, I can say. I dunno, I think it will be awhile before these are available to troops and even then, the pogues will get first dibs on them. Not to be a pessimist, but that's just how I've seen things happen in the past.

saw a rewiew on those vehicles on the Discovery channel a couple of weeks ago.. nice..

a company here in minnesota got bought out, they created a device that is attached to the front of a vehicle, that transmits a freq that detonates explosives...

I'm sure they are shipping it there now.. it will be very useful in Iran...

You mean when the US evacuates in year so fast that they're captured by whoever takes over and then sold to Iran for a fraction of what they're worth. Thats when they will be 'useful in Iran'
