Russia Plan to stop Asteroid impact 2029

    http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/8435829.stm

    http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009...earth-asteroid

Every year there is always some doom and gloom prophecy fortelling the end of the world, it was going to happen in 2000, its going to happen 2012, but in 2029 we really could have a doomsday sceanario. The asteroid is expected to pass near us in 2029 and again in 2036. The asteroid is expected to pass within 30,000 km of us, that probably sounds quite far to most of you, but to give you an idea of how close that is, the moon is 380,000 km from us. Also the odds of it hitting us are 250,000 to one, sounds like pretty good odds, but considering that this is something that could wipe out 95% of life on earth, im still not too comfortable with those odds.

So what to do. Russia are apparantly making plans to think of ways to deflect it. Firing a nuke is NOT an idea. All you'll do is break it up into 2 or 3 smaller bits which simply increases the problem.

This is crazy because this is a very real possible end of the world sceanrio and one of the few natural events that can wipe out even the human race.

sounds very interesting, and atleast this could actually do the job, not like the rest of the bullshit predictions....id like to think by 2019 wed have a more acurate prediction so as to plan properly.

This particular astroid would not wipe out 95% of the earth, its too small however I respect the Russians for addressing this issue, mabe the rest of the world will join them.

Seeing as Putin sells himself as the Chuck Norris of Russia, why don't they just launch him at the asteroid?

Taking into account that the world revolves around the sun, and the earth is moving closer to the sun, 30,000 km might as well be in your back yard.

How can you take all these variables into account and make a logical prediction?

    That's a real close shave.

Not to mention that when asteroids go skipping along, other planets, suns, etc, have an gravitational effect on the asteroid itself.

I studied space phenomena, astrology, and the effects of the time and space continuum, with other cosmic related subjects.

I'm with Flagg, we may be screw.

@PuzzyFalker, not been able to find out the size of the asteroid but I was shown this little "fun toy".

    http://www.lpl.arizona.edu/impacteffects/

If you type in the parameters you can calculate how wide the damage would be. I think they base this on the impact craters we have round the earth today. I think I also read that if the asteroid hit the ocean it would cause more damage that hitting a continant.
