Bother with shrugs??
Generally I am so smoked by the time my workout is finished I don't bother. What do you guys think? Are they needed?

I like them I don't know your workout, but if your traps are already smoked from your other lifts and you are making progress you could get away with not doing them.

Yeah man, I just care about strength. Basically I am just asking... are they needed for deads or maybe military strength.... thanks by the way

Heavy deadlifts make my traps sore as hell, so if you don't want to do them don't. If you want "military strength" I would suggest sticking to compound movements anyway.

Right.. I do a ton of heavy high pulls and kettlebell work...I guess I just didn't want to short change myself. Just want to total 2000 raw before I kick the bucket. Thank you sir.

I love shrugs, not a huge fan of upright rows for the traps as it seems to bother my shoulders. If in a heavy DL cycle i would ditch them tho

I love doing heavy shrugs but yeah you’re right they will wear you out after a session of deads. That’s why I do them about 3 days after I do deads. I feel heavy shrugs are essential to building strength because in any powerlifting event it’s your traps that you are pulling together as tight as you can to help you with your lift.

Good point... maybe I will just throw them in on squat day

I use one of these to finish off with, since i am tired, it protects me from injury..
most i've done is 5 plates on a side for 20 reps.. but that was when i was training with 20 reps.. not any longer..
Now i use 3 plates for 6 reps x 6 sets 30 second intervals.. what it did for me is correct a lopsided developmentThe answer to your every question

I'm the same. I throw barbell and dumbbell shrugs in after my shoulder workout for good measure. They grew a lot through all my heavy deadlifting, however, when I started to isolate them, my deadlift strength went up too.
Perhaps there was a correlation between the two. My guess is, there was.

Good stuff. I am learning from this post and it isn't even mine. I kinda had the same question

I only do them on heavy dead days. I alternate my dead and cleans. When I clean I do heavy high pulls and when I dead, I do heavy shrugs.

So I suppose the moral of the story here is to include them. Will do.

Please Under stand How Important the Shrug is. the trap is a massive muscle and the shrug is a major size and strength builder for it
