    Whey Protein vs Homemade Shake

Alright, I know whey protein absorbs in your muscles faster, and all that.

For the past month, I've substituted out whey protein powder, and I've been making my own shakes. They are more or less weight gainer shakes.

1 egg, 3 egg whites, 1 tablespoon natural peanut butter, skim milk, 1 banana, and a couple scoops of some instant carnation breakfast mix.

My question is, will taking a whey protein shake post workout benefit all that much that having the homemade shake above? So far my gains have been steady, almost better then when I was taking whey, so why change. Plus I save money

Ok, so i take the eggs out of the shake and cook them, leave everything else. Should i still invest in a whey protein powder?

Alot of people I know use liquid egg whites PWO. I prefer BCAA's.

I do add 1-2 eggs to my PWO shake to help bind everything together due to the mixability, or lack of, of BCAA's.

What is this carnation breakfast mix? The eggs milk and pb would have about 20gms protien. Why don't you add just 1 scoop of whey into that?

Or maybe add some more egg white or bcaas if you can get them cheap. Your trying to gain - you need the extra protien mate whether from whole foods or whey.

As for the benefits vs whey I would also be interested in that.

Do you not take a mix of Whey/Cassein PWO. Lately, I have been reading its better than either alone (Lyle)?

Never done that but now that I think about it, it would be a pretty good idea since you can get the spike then have it slowly release aminos for several hours...

I would think this is a decent idea as well (have done it often) but I believe Bino was saying it was not a good idea. If he gave a reason I dont remember what it was.

If you're interested swifto, I finally found a study that I originally looked at a few years ago that investigated whey vs casein supplementation and blood plasma levels of the amino acids phenylalanine and leucine over a period of 5 hours. You can make an inference from it that it might be beneficial to take both post workout.
