Pre workout and post workout shake

What should i be looking for for both pre and post workout shakes? I would consider an actual meal but i go from work straight to workout. I usually wokout about an hour is that good?

Well, i personally don't do shakes anymore. Just avoid carb sources from dextrose, lactose, maltodextrin and fructose. How long you workout is all dependent on what you're doing exactly during that hour.

Blend up some chicken breast. I've never tried it but I've heard of a few people doing it. I'm not big on shakes either. When I used shakes or if I get the urge for one, I usually go with gold standard whey or dynamatize elite gourmet.

For pre workout are you referring to something for energy?

I just read in Men's Health magazine that men who book ended their work outs with a protein shake saw up to 15% more gains in lean muscle mass than those who only had one shake post workout.

    Interesting eh?

Were the shakes exactly the same ingredients?

    PRE
I have had amazing results with Jack 3D. I was able to buy 11 of them before the pulled them off the shelf. By far the best pre work out drink I have ever had.

    POST
I use GNC's gold standard 100% WHEY after each work out. I put power in my shaker and fill it with water at the gym on the way out. I'm so used to it my body calls for it and I drink it in about 2 mins.

I have seen a lot of guys at the gym drinking energy drinks before and during their work out. I don't think I would want to drink a MONSTER drink while I'm working out. What do you guys think ???

A monster wouldn't stay down long during my workout...I do occasionally drink a spike before I workout if I don't have any preworkout. For pre I like neurocore, jack3d, c4....currently I am using craze. I'm liking it a whole lot!

Neurocore has probably been my favorite..it's been a while since I've had it so that could change. I might get some soon and compare with craze. The only downside to neurocore is the horrible taste. You eventually get use to it though.

As for what you're looking for in each one:

Preworkout: Basically stimulants. Some people think these are dirty and bad for you and stay away completely, some people think they need them to workout. I think the answer is somewhere in between. I like to use them for about two months, then stay off them for about two month, so you don't build up a tolerance. I think the best preworkout is not a drink or shake, but the ECA stack. My second favorite was Jack3D before they changed the formula. Basically you want stuff like caffeine, beta-alanine, DMAA, taurine, etc...

Postwork: You want protein and carbs to refuel. A 200-lb male should have about 50 grams of protein, so two scoops, not one. Also, you want about 80-100 grams of carbs. There is a debate on whether you want fast-acting carbs to spike your blood sugar levels or slow-acting to keep you steady. The fast acting would be dextrose and maltodextrin or waxy maize. The slow acting would be instant oatmeal, which you can add right to the shake. I suspect most here will say go with the oatmeal, but there will be people arguing both ways. But, in either case many people just have protein in their postwork out shake and leave out the carbs, which is the most important time of the day that you actually need carbs. In the morning and post work out you need carbs.

As for the just eat meals people... I don't get it. Food is food. People take shakes because it's easier. A meal would have the same effect, but I find it easy to just drink a shake right after working out, which then gives me time to go home a spend time to prepare a good meal. If you take a shake, you still need to eat plenty of solid food meals, too, but I don't get people being so against them. The bulk jugs of protein powder aren't really much more expensive per pound of protein than meat is. It's not like you're throwing away your money, you're just mixing it up a little. But, if instead of a shake you want to just eat about 50 grams of protein and 80-100 grams of carbs (could change based on your macros. This is for about a 200lb male that lifts) in a meal have at it.

Creatine and beta alanine will do more good post workout imo. And by "instant oatmeal" I hope you don't mean that stuff packed with sugar

No, not the oatmeal packed with sugar. The "instant oatmeal" just means it's precooked as opposed to the steel cut stuff. Nutritionally they're the same, just the other stuff you have to cook longer. You can throw the precooked instant stuff right into the shake as is and it tastes good.

Next month it will say just the opposite. Anything to sell product. Im not saying it's bad to take it before or after, it just all depends on your goals and what you are taking.

I like bcaa before working out.

Do you guys not find that Jack3d drops like a tonne of bricks once it wears off? Always makes me want to go to sleep!

I have two approaches to pre workouts depending on my goals, if I am going for strength PR's or bulking then it usually looks like this:

Ephedrine and caffein (more just the caffein now at around 200g) and I try and eat a good solid meal about 30-45 minutes before hand (obviously not everyone can do this at all times)

I am also one of those guys with the monster energy drink, by sipping it along with water find it stops me from crashing after heavy sets as its just rammed full of sugar.

If I am trying to cut like I am at the moment I try and make sure my last meal before gym was my high complex carb meal about an hour before hand to give me energy, I usually have a pint of fresh ground black coffee (no sugar) and then hit the gym.

I have seen a lot of articles lately saying that your post workout is actually better started about half way through your work out and then finished off after. I like a casein whey mix with 400ml fat free milk for my simple carbs (I know I should avoid milk and one day I will cut it out but until then it keeps me sane and I like a ***** can't stand my shakes without it.) I also try and keep a 1:1 ratio on my protein and simple carbs.

I would also like to point out that personally when I started incorporating post work out nutrition my recovery time dropped in a really noticeable manner.
