Who said running is good for cardio?
I despise it and never prescribe such a thing.
Keep in mind, I am referring to cardio for FAT loss and preservation of lean muscle mass, not for endurance runners and marathoners alike.
However, it does beat up the feet/ankles/knees/lower back over time, as you are experiencing, and that's yet another reason to not run!
Cardio choices are dependent upon what you want your desired result from cardio to be.

I always go for the x-trainer as I also have a bad back at times. It takes away the presure on the knees and works upper body also

Punching bag
I added 20 minutes of punching bag to my cardio routine last summer and had amazing results.

I mix it up, moutain biking, speed bag, jumping rope, stair climber (the one with the actual rotating stairs), eliptical trainer. I can't stand running though.

It amazes me that you guys who live in colder parts of Canada don't talk more about Xcountry skiing. I could do that everyday....for about a month and I'd long for the relative 'warmth' of the midwest again. Seriously, it is a great choice for cardio if you get snow.

Don't most of the highest parts of the Smokies keep snow year round? I know it isn't feasable that you go up there everyday, I'm just curious.
