Whats more efficient for calorie burning?
I was having a debate with a friend and we were discussing what is more effecient for burning calories, swimming in a pool or running on a treadmill. same amount of time for each. not talking about muscle gains or anything else just whats more effecient for calorie burning, i was saying running because in the pool your body temp is lowered, and i always thought that a higher body temp will help to burn calories.
thanks
Nick

I believe Swimming is the much better calorie burner and overall better cardio. Water serves as resitence, which makes you work every muscle in your body.

I do not know about calories...but for burning fat it is to hard to keep yourself at the proper level consistantly.

well surely its purely dependant on your working level and if working at exactly the same level in both (dont know how you would work that out) i would go with swimming because there are more muscles involved, requiring more blood, more oxygen, more heart beats etc = more energy expenditure.

I would say swimming would be WAY tougher to do for an equal amount of time on a treadmill. Try swimming for 30 min then talk.

its not very fair to look at it on the toughness of the activity when swimming is involved because the major problem with most people is that they have terrible technique which then reflects on the work load, where if u compared it to running most people arent half bad (compared to swimming technique at least)

I've heard that swimming isnt as efficient because your body doens't have to try as hard to keep your temperature cool because the water will keep you cool. Not sure how much of a difference that makes in overall calorie expenditure

Swimming burns calories at a rate of about 3 calories a mile per pound of bodyweight. If you weigh 150 lbs. and it takes you 30 minutes to swim one mile (1,760 yards or 1,600 meters), then you will be using about 900 calories in one hour. However, many swimmers do not swim that quickly, and many cannot swim for that distance or duration.
Many people feel extremely hungry after training in the pool, and may simply replace all the calories they've burned with a large post-exercise meal.
So as many people observe that they feel like 'eating a horse' after they have finished a swiming session, and may overcompensate for the energy they have just burned...Last edited by S.P.G; 03-06-2006 at 05:51 AM.

I found the conversion but it's not all i remembered it as..
100yds swimming=1.5 miles of biking=.25 miles of running...
so i'm guessing since swimming is the smallest comparable distance, that it burns the most calories in that comparable distance.

He is saying swim 100 yards and its like biking 1.5 miles or running .25 miles. Same workload

yeah in terms of calories burned for distance traveled...the distances equal for the different training methods...
