In terms of which machine is more effective, the elliptical trainers are less harsh on your joints, don't need to elevate (just change resistance), and are supposed to burn more energy.

There is much more to it than just a price.
Things You want to look at when buying a treadmill.
    1. All good treadmills are built based on usage so, for You I wouldn't go lower than 2.5 Continuous Duty Motor.
    2. The warranty that comes with the product.
    3. Deck size.
    4. Deck type ( ortopedic belt? FlexDeck technology? Shock system? etc.)
    5. Programming, You dont want to pay extra 500-900 just for programming and options YOu will never use.
    6. Run on each one before You buy, make sure the one You want feels most comfortable.

Like said above, if You have problems with Your joints, the elliptical machine will be the ultimate choice since it totally eliminates the impact.
    Great cardio and Resistance workouts.

The treadmill company I can suggest:
    Vision Fitness
Only treadmill company that let's their customer customise their own treadmills, for example, deck with ortopedic belt with simple console ( no programs, jump and go, manual workout set up).
Decent price, good quality, very good warranty.
Lifetime warranty on frame and motor, 5 years on all parts and electronics, 1 year on labor.
I've been in fitness business for a while now so, PM me with any questions, I deal with the best brands and best brands for the money. I know them like my own pocket.
Also I great tool for treamill research is:
    www.treadmilldoctor.com
You can compare and read up on all the treadmills out there.
    Take care!
