I used to split up my back twice a week like Jay Cutler. Day one I would focus on a lot of deadlifts, rows, dumbbell rows and Day two I would focus on a lot of pull ups, pull downs, wide grip cable rows. Although you don't have to go too crazy each day because you're workin' your back 2x a week so you wanna avoid overtrainin'.

deadlifts and all rowing movements help with the thickness.
chin ups and lat pulldowns help with the width

You don't have to split to two days... just focus more on one area (either width/thickness) every alternate week by the number of exercises you do for each. If you want to split it however, make sure they are 3-4 days apart.

    cheers

    For thickness:
    Seated-Pulley Rows
    T-Bar Rows
    Dumbell Rows

    For Width:
    Pull-Ups
    Machine Pull-Overs
    Underhand Pulldowns (close grip)
