i pretty much agree with all that is said. i dont use most of those machines for those excercises. and if i do its a very low weight to warm up for a different movement.

ive dislocated my right shoulder numerous times. so im more inclined to use free weights. helps strengthen the shoulder. and i can move in a way that my body is supposed to. the pec dec machine and military press machine really screw me up. also the smith machine squats really tweak my shoulders back and i can just feel them screaming. thats why i dont use the machines. i do use the leg extension machine from time to time, supersetted with hamstring curls. but ive not noticed any discomfort in my knees from doing so. main thing is to listen to your body. it will tell you what you need to know.

no leg extensions or lat pulldowns? makes no sense. they say the leg extension performs a movement our bodies dont - true if you are an athlete as large quads do limit range of motion and knee drive but as bber's the leg extension makes the quads look great so this point is bs. as for lat pulldowns, thats bs too. the rest of the list is ok i guess, i wouldnt stop doing any of them because of this list though.

lat pulldowns and leg extensions i feel are good exercises if you know how to target the muscle group

lat pull downs are good just not behind the neck
-
01-08-2008, 09:57 AM #8
that is a good point ramblin but i was always taught that it was ok to go behind the neck as long as you don't bring the bar too far down near your traps, does anyone feel it is ok if you bring the bar about half way down your head?

its when u pull your neck foward that does the damage
-

i always thought it was when you go too far down, if you do the motion right now the further down you go the more your shoulder blades pinch together
-

i believe its a combination of both i just dont do em

That is a recipe for injury. It's much more natural and safe to do the same movement to the front. Either way your lats are getting worked. But behind the neck puts pressure on the shoulders which isn't the muscle group you are trying work.

I dont see how military press is "bad"
i do db deated military press all the time, never had a problem, and shoulders are one of my stronger points.
but i do agree with most of it.
plus, i dont do more than half of those exercises anyways
I suppose most of it boils down to actually performing the exercise correctly
If something is working for you, and you notice no problems, I dont see why someone should stop cuz of this list.
ill go back and fully read it, when im done with lunch

Why wasn't the Total hip machine on the list?? Hey, maybe it works?......But no self respecting man should ever be seen on that thing

any excercise can be harmful. You must be careful and take note if an excercise causes pain or discomfort then i simply dont do it, I thought the article was a little far fetched. As for the suggested safer excercises - what a joke. I mean who apart from personal trainers actually thinks there any benefit to medicine ball throws!!

i feal as if no one can just say wich 10 machiens not to use... everyone is different. i do agree with some of what they say, but i do like the leg extension... i dont go as heavy as i could go with it, i keep it moderatly heavy and feal as if i get a good workout. but i have never liked behind the neck lat pulldowns.

hey
wow if these are so bad it looks like all my gym would be nagging with injuries
-
I agree with about two of those. The rest really don't make any sense if you have ever studied any biomechanics.
-
The roman chair sit ups are probably the worst. There's always a few who can do them on a long term basis with no problem but some will hurt their back big time.

I think that is pretty much bull shit. any machine can hurt you.

I agree with green. Any machine can cause injury if used incorrectly, just as free weights can. I see people all the time doing lat pull downs behind the neck and frankly I'm surprised that more people aren't injured. Maybe it's the weight? Anyways you should always use proper form when doing any exercise to avoid injury.

BULL SH!T...
Leg curl
Leg extension
Leg press
Lat pull down (not behind the back)
Shoulder press
Hip abduction
Hip adduction
These are really good exercises. As some of you said, ANY exercise can be harmful.
One thing people don't mention here is.. WHAT kind of machines? What brand?
Leg extension made by one company does not equal leg extension done by a different company. They are all different.
It is all about if they are biomechanically correct.
If they are, then you should be feeling really comfortable while using it.
I know there are some piece of sh!t machines out there, that feel like your knees are about to blow up. But there are some great products out there as well.
As long as you are feeling the muscle working without any unwanted pain then you are good.
There is A LOT of outdated gyms out there. Even though new technology is available and these new really nice machines are for sale, well... some of the gyms will have their five, ten years old equipment. It is easy to understand as the commercial equipment is extremely expensive.
Take care.Last edited by UberSteroids; 02-12-2008 at 11:55 PM.

if you can't use full ROM then don't do it. you should be able to feel your joints irritation if you are in a weird place.
