When you count your reps for alternating dumbell curls, you count the number of curls for each arm.
Standing Dumbell Curls: 10 reps = Meaning 10 reps for both arms.
Standing Dumbell Alternating Curls: 10 reps = Meaning 5 reps for each arm.

Your using one arm at a time oposed to barbell curls where your using both arms at the same time.

When you do alternating curls, you concentrate on one bicep muscle, which for some people is a better workout since body-mind connection is stronger and you can give your 100% to a single muscle at a time.
When you do NOT alternate, the exercise becomes a bit harder, since you have to put more effort into an exercise which now requires a bit more explosive strength. Also, there is more rest time for each arm when you do alternating curls.

standing arlternating curls are funny to watch at the gym since the amount of swinging can be very pronounced in some.
since when did seated one arm french curls fall out of fashion?
