Why is it whenever people realize you may be smarter than you look, their way of dealing with you and interacting with you automatically changes?

My boss was let go at the end of January and since then i have had to take on more responsiblity at work.. which is great because i needed a challenge..

The thing is the two other coworkers, who also have received a bit more work - seem to treat me differently now..

It's become a little obvious that i get more responsiblity and the VP has made it known im doing a good job - before i felt like a peer, but now i feel more like they don't include me in things because i'm not like them. (For the record i don't give them orders and technically we are all at the same level) i get the feeling that they perceive me as being the enemy now. We still chat amongst ourselves alot..but conversation is cautious..

I have always beleive to never let on how smart you are, because then people never see you coming.. I guess this proves my point.

i was in teh same situation...just how it is... they either think you are trying to take over / on a power trip / think you are better than them. In my case... 2 of the 3 were correct :P

take it as a compliment that they see you as better than them and perhaps promotion material............

They just feel insecure around you now. They are a bit jealous cause they aren't getting the attention you are getting and you are moving up the ladder while they stay where they are. I see it all the time. Don't let them get you down. Just keep doing the best job you can. After all they aren't paying your bills YOU ARE, so you are more motivated and talented then they are and you want to succed! Nothing wrong with that. Keep up the good work!!

i'm not saying that you do.
it sounds like they are hating on you because you are on the way up.

just keep going. forget about them.
perform at the highest possible level.
it's not your fault if they are not being recognized.

I've been at Sony all of 3 weeks and got a promotion last Friday. Over a guy who's been here 7 months and another who's been here over a year. The worst part being they didn't tell either of them before hand. They announced it during a department meeting. So yes, these 2 guys treat me differently. Oh well.
