    Smacking weights together?

Alright, what's the consensus on smacking the dumbells together at the top of a rep? Personally I think it is weak. The people doing this are the same guys throwing the weights on the ground to draw attention and get noticed.

Smacking the weights at releives the tension on your muscle which is not what you are aiming for.
I do it if im struggling but normally I try my best not to let them touch.

I'm guessing you mean when your doing shoulder presses, but i have done it. It was more of a habit for me. It didnt take much if any pressure off my lifts.

its bound to happen on certain exercises, but when i guy does 12 reps and bangs them together every rep, its kinda annoying.

why.. would the weights even touch?
i dont even bring them together when doingflys.. constant tension far more effective.

I agree 100% Tai. Some people, however, like to bang them together for rhythmic purposes. I think it is senseless but yet i see it all the time.

I wouldn't have a problems. I've only used up to the 100lbs dumbbells and at that point it feels like my shoulders are going to rip out of the sockets!

I don't "smack" the weights together, but I definately make them touch. However the touch is a very slight touch, not to mention we have rubberized dumbells.

sometimes i'll bring them together during a squeeze at the top of a rep but never abnoxiously... you don't know anyway cause they're rubber.

I just recently found out rubberized has its pros and cons. We have them nice rubberized hex plates. For the most part they are awesome: Easy to grip, don't chip and wont make sounds when hitting another plate. Cons : When doing deads. You pull this heavy a$$ load off the ground then when you return the load and place the weight 100% back to the floor before your next rep the weights shift (from the hex plates) causing you to move back a step sometimes and lose a little bit of focus.

You know what you should do is just buy a bowflex and workout at home because your paying way to much mind to what other people are doing.
let them do their thing and you do yours.

for me its all about power and control.

power up the weights with full effort but at the same time control the weight dont let it control you.

so no i tend not to smack the weights around so much.

It would be very rare for me to allow the weights to bang together. I do make them touch though but without making a sound.......if it rings at all then the rep isn't counted. Contracting my muscles as hard as I can while controlling the weight is such a manner means I do not let those weights bang........I haven't the energy to make up a rep nor do I want to prolong my time in the gym.

    1. clinking weights transfers forces to the joints (bad)
    2. clinking weights takes the stress away from muscle mass
    3. clinking weights changes the range of motion for the muscles......this range is inferior to the range obtained by not clinking the weights

to sum it up, clinking the weights is bullshit no matter how you look at it

Screw smacking weights. It's that one stupid moron who thinks he's the toughest at the gym and always goes "URRAGH!!!!", "URRRAGH!!" at the top of his lungs at the end of every rep that I hate....

ive got a fever! and the only thing thats cure it is more Dumb bell.

i had a lifting partner that always hit the metal dumbells together till one day we were doing side raises and one of the reps didnt clink. his giggle stick turned blue. he didnt hit the dumbells together after that.
