lol.. I've never seen anyone use this term in the social setting.
It's generally reserved for the realm of academia: whereas pompous lecturers trying to undermine students...w/ allusions to their imagined modesty.
...This is usually attempted by down-playing themselves using the above-quoted term casually.

Ironic.. as i was having a discussion with a lecturer the other about just this topic.
An author, who was pretty hardcore in the formative years of his writing lost his legitimacy in the latter years of his writing.
This was primarily because of the pedantic manner in which he wrote during the aforementioned phase.
His arguments ceased to be moving.
Namely because they ceased to be arguments.
They were more in the vein of flowery prose for the purpose of intellectual masturbation.

You miss the point. I'm not a native speaker of English. These mistakes are usual. It's very difficul for a not native speaker to recognize the registers of a language. I've never been to an English speaking country. I've read lots of writers with a flowery prose but ometimes i hardly follow what you'r saying. My use of the word "pedantic" has much to do with my limitations.

Understood.
I figured from your username, as well as how your sentences were structured.
That's why I said that no one speaks like that outside the realm of Academia.
It's like when i was learning spanish.
They taught us non-conversational Spanish.
Whereas, most Spanish-speaking individuals don't speak that type.
So, dialects... conversational speech went over my head.

You are missing the point here too. I'm not a high brow. When i was 30, i realized i didn't like the academic world so i decided to leave it behind and do something else. I I were a high brow, i would'nt be here sharing my opinions with you. I think i'd look in another place.
My curiosity about literatute led to learn to read in English, German, French and Portuguese (I learned Latin and Old Greek at the University). I can't throw it to the dustbin. I did it because i love it as much as I love working out.
I don't think i'm superior to anybody. I'm not interested in showing off, not interested in being an egghead. I'm here to learn about steroids . I'm here to improve. I'm here to make friends and have some fun.
I've found very nice people in some cases. but...permit me some criticism. Sometimes guys here are not so open, friendly and easy-going as they say they are.

Coming back to the thread I am legend is a remake. There is a previous version The Last Man on Earth (1964) starring Vincent Price. I haven't seen it and i don't think I can find it here...people say it's better than will smith version.

What did I hate about the movie? The movie was late. I understand that the book came out well before the two movies, 28 Days Later and 28 Weeks Later, but making a movie on a similar concept (a virus that causes people to be extremely aggressive / rabid) was just bad timing.
Not mention that everyone that read the book, self excluded, said the book was so much different and better than the movie.
Hollywood screws up again.

I actually liked the film. It delivered what i expect from an american movie with will smith in it - some action and a basic storyline which was quite good. The effects were good as was the acting. It wasnt ground breaking but then few of the big budget will smith movies are. They could have done more but for me it was worth watching. It might be noted that i have not seen the original or read the book allthough i would like too.
