With my record, instead of a martial art, I should take some lessons in the marital arts.

sambo ..." Sambo has evolved into an extremely formidable fighting art with principles applicable to martial artists of any style. Sambo’s arsenal includes, but is not limited to, strikes, joint locks, chokes, throws, ground fighting, and weapons."

take wrestling, some boxing, jj, karate and a touch of judo and what you have is a well rounded protection system that is very affective

or i would just taking boxing... most street fights will start and end with boxing

I would go with boxing or Krav. BJJ would be my first pick if you were approaching it from a competition stand point but for a real situation probably Krav. You can wreck some shop with that shit

krav maga isn't that much different from a lot of other ones.. most entail self defense and using anything as a weapon (which are the basics of it) how you learn to use the basics just depends on the school, but you could learn similar things in other arts..

bjj is good for fighting, but most people don't know that their arm is about to break and if you do that to win a fight you'll probably end up in a lot more trouble than if you just gave him a bloody nose.

that being said, if someone were to attack, bjj would be my first choice of defense

muay thai for many reasons for me.

First, I'd not be looking to compete in a MMA torny or anythiing, of square off against someone in a cage. I'd be taking it for self offence/defence reasons. I think it's a good base. You have solid kicks, punches, ewbows, knees.

Normally people say BJJ, but IMO BJJ defense is easy to learn unless you are fighting a black belt, it's quick to learn most sub defenses. Unless you are exausted, or not willing to expend the energy.

MT fits a body style that is more desirable for me. Taller, leaner and shredded. You maintain flexability and have great power behind your blows.

Only bad part, I'd hate to bust a shin throwing leg kicks! You see those videos? OUCH.

I'd have to decide between BJJ and Krav Maga.

Does anyone know how long it takes to learn Krav Maga? Just enough to be able to defend yourself in a fight? I'm pretty busy, but I *do* want to learn just enough so that I don't get wasted in a fight ever.

Krav Maga originated in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. The primary founder, Imi Lichtenfeld moved to the land of Israel when circumstances for Jews in Europe took a turn for the worse. From Israel, Krav Maga spread to the rest of the world.

keep in mind any throw you do most likely will on a very hard surface not a mat or a ring ... long time a go... in land far far away ... i was in a bar fight and did head throw landing on his head and my elbo ... i shattered the tip of my elbow and the skin was split wide open showing the bone... so, hesitate to start any fights with throws or body locks... that is why sombo or boxing

wouldnt bjj put you on the ground to fight back?

Get your facts straight. It's Street Fighter. If I had made a reference to Mortal Kombat--that would just not be realistic in a real fight.
