To play a game of football, you need at least 22 sets of pads and helmets, as well as a football. To play a game of hockey, you need at least 12 sets of sticks and skates and hockey equipment. These are all expensive propositions. To play a game of basketball, you need a net in addition to a ball. But note that due to basketball being less financially demanding, it has risen in popularity throughout the world. For soccer, you need a ball among 20-something participants. Note that the cost per participant is extremely low.
Note that soccer fields are extremely large. This indicates that real estate is dirt-cheap where soccer is played. In more advanced countries, a phenomenon known as indoor soccer has arrived. While much less boring to watch or participate in than the traditional crap, it also indicates that property is more precious due to economic development of that culture.

Also, as one can see in the truly impoverished areas of the world, you can make a soccer ball out of various scraps of trash, and kick it around with bare feet. One observes slum children in Brazil living in trash heaps forming round objects from the debris strewn around their front yard. Most of the world can't afford to play real sports, so they participate in soccer instead."

you could always be men about it and not use all the pads and helmets. then start calling 'football' rugby. call 'soccer' football and everybody's happy

.... egg chasing's boring anyway. most of the world love football because its the beautiful game. dont worry my chum once u american's get abit better at 'soccer' you will start appreciating it just as much as the rest of the world... oh believe it or not americans arn't the only nation that can afford pads and helmets

Cause they're running people over, avoiding tackles, breaking tackles and scoring touchdowns against the biggest, strongest and fastest combined athletes in the world.

all of what you said translates to soccer as well. fastest athletes would definitely go to soccer... line up any football player vs a good soccer player and have them run 120yds ( a soccer field) and see who wins.

uk is right in his first post on this page, football isn't expensive either... you can pick up anything you want and throw it just as easily as you can kick it. as a kid, i played a lot of tackle football without pads or a helmet, its the same as soccer. the higher you go, the more you actually need the gear.

little kids in pee wee football wear pads, but little kids that play soccer in a league still have jerseys, shin guards, and cleats, so its not like they all kick around a ball of trash...

1st of all I guarantee that if you line up the best soccer players against the best football players the football player will win 9 out of 10 times. How many soccer or rugby players have world class speed. Maybe a handful. In the NFL every team can boast at least 5-10 athletes who can run sub 10 sec hundreds and most have. Especially considering many receivers and defensive backs ran track in college. And don't get me started about the number of former NFL athletes that actually ran track in the OLYMPICS, how many soccer players can say that?

Somebody sited a polynesian rugby player that ran an 11.1 100 meters at 250lbs, there are high school football players that run faster than that. Cesar O'Neal in the early 90's at 285lbs in high school ran a 10.7 hundred.

For everyone shitting on football those videos show skill, no doubt, but the fact that these guys aren't facing the athletes or the contact football players face says all.

And let's not bring Rugby into the equation. Google the number of rugby players and soccer players that tried out for NFL teams and you'll find the only players who made it were kickers! Facts are facts, there is no other sport on this f*cking planet that puts together the greatest caliber of athletes than American football. There was a TV show (The Science of Sports I believe) on the discovery channel that measured the impact force of a top Rugby player (one of the NZ All Blacks), a top Hockey player (can't remember his name), and a top NFL linebacker (Joey Porter), and its was determined that the NFL player delivers the most impact force. Pads make the game more exciting. When football was first developed in the United States, President Roosevelt threatened to outlaw the sport because players were being killed. Shoulder pads and leg pads were developed then to protect the players. The advent of the helmet served two purposes: to oppease the weak at heart it was developed supposedly to prevent injuries but according to the heavy hitters of the era (Dick Butkus, Mike Ditka), it was another weapon to hurt a player with. Either way, no other sport boast 250+lb athletes running full speed at 30+mph colliding into each other 60+ times a game.

Now lets stop the crazy talk and leave it at that. Soccer is the worlds game for a reason and mostly because of the reasons cited above. But you cannot compare the athletes by any stretch of the imagination.

I'm not hating on soccer, that's what I've played my entire life! I was just explaining why the football runs were good. I also meant that football players are a overall fastest, biggest and strongest combined averages...if that makes sense.

By the way, the fastest soccer players aren't faster than the fastest American football players. There are players in the NFL that run sub 4.4 40yds and sub 10sec 100yds.

But it is about size, speed, and power, and athleticism. its sports!!. lol

I don't wanna watch two little 10 year old boys playing football.
Nor do I wanna watch men prancing around kicking a ball.
My American morbid hunger wants to see smash mouth football, people getting f'ed up. I wanna see hockey fights, and people going through glass. I wanna see high flying dunks and shaq taking down the rim. I wanna see kobe drop 50 in a game....etc, etc

Soccer is a snore fest. Watch for an hour plus, and it ends 1 to 0. off a freaking penalty kick! Thats stupid....imo...lol, to each their own.
The only exciting thing in soccer are the ridiculous crazy fans that kill each other and act a fool...

But you cannot compare the athletes by any stretch of the imagination.
football's an olympic sport my boy.

fair one, dont know how the tread got from who plays football. to who is the best athelete

ok mate leave it at that, american footballers are more athletic and football's a better game x
