Animal abuse - What would you do?
I'm walking my dog at the park today, and an older white guy walks up with his dog.
His dog gets excited and jumps up, so he pinches the dog on the neck so hard it yelps and then pushes her head down and yells "no!"
I walk away and think that was a little much.
Afterwards he walks about 15 feet away and I see him stop to talk to another couple that have a small dog. A minute later I guess his dog did the same thing and he violently slammed the dog's head down and held her to the ground yelling at her as she was yelping the whole time. This lasted about 4 seconds, which seems alot longer than it sounds when a dog is screaming.
I start to walk towards them, go to open my mouth, and nothing comes out.
The couple just stood there and said nothing. I looked at them with an angry look on my face and then eye****ed the guy and shook my head and walked away.
Should I have said something?
Is it my place to say anything?
It made me angry but I didn't know what to say or if it was any of my business. I love dogs and hate seeing them treated like that no matter what they've done. There's a way to train and to punish your dog without inflicting pain on it. Maybe I'm being over-sensitive, but it bothers me that I didn't say anything. Not that it would have changed anything anyway.
What would you have done?

I can't stand people who abuse animals, it pisses me off. Karma's a bitch, I hope he has a miserable death.

I probably would have given him a piece of my mind.

No excuse to abuse animals, unless they're violent, then f*ck em. You should have kicked him in the neck.

Dog's have personalities, I couldn't eat one. Cows are useless, chickens are dumb. I eat those.

I take animal abuse the same way I take children abuse. Both are helpless.
I would at least tell him something. I know it feels like you are minding somebody else's business, but I would speak my mind to the guy.

Im sure he'll get his revenge when he gets home....

It's a tough spot to be in. I know my wife and I saw a lady smacking the bejeezus out of her kid and something was said. It really just turned into one of those parking lot arguments where nothing that was said changed anything. Spanking a kid is one thing and so is disciplining a dog but abuse is abuse.
The downfall is, you say something and the puss doesn't say anything back but then takes it out on the dog after you leave.
Sounds like a real tough guy to me. Maybe if you see him again just walk up and grab him by the back of the head and push his face to the ground and yell NO NO NO and don't let go until he yelps!!

i would have said something because i have run into this before. not that i think it will change how **** face decides to discipline his animal, but at least i have said something and let the prick know that that shit just isnt right. and who knows, maybe the asswipe will have a moment of clarity and actually change...one could only hope.
there is a fine line between discipline and abuse...but once the line has been crossed...abuse is quite obvious and you shouldn't feel bad about pointing it out.

Once my dog Sarge was trying to play with some dudes old lab, he apparently thought my dog was "harassing" his dog. So, he took it upon himself to grab Sarge and slam him down on the concrete sidewalk. I was instantly filled with rage. I approached him and laid him out without saying a word. Then I had to leave the park rather quickly for obvious legal reasons.

My suggestion would be BUTT OUT! I swear people worry about other people's business entirely too much. My dogs yelp when i even grab their colars after they have done something bad...does that mean i beat them? NO. You don't know more than what you saw after 2 seconds...dude didnt' have a stick and wasn't throwing punches.
Oh and Nooomoto, that's what leashes are for. If someone had their dog walk up to mine without a leash that I didnt' know I would slam the owner not the dog.

some dogs are stubborn and need a little correction to get them to obey
when my dalmation was young, I had to use a choke collar on her through the instruction of a well respected dog trainer.
I only had to do it a few times.
Depends how bad he's really hurting the dog I think.

LMAO @ this. I've seen my dog do this several times in my house, which was more tolerable before I shampooed my carpet and went to a shoes off household.
I can see Wolf's and Zimmy's perspective on the situation. People get pretty emotionally involved when it's their pet involved. For some people, it's just like having their kid manhandled by a stranger.
I think there are social merits to speaking your mind if you see something you consider unjust. It may or may not help the situation. You might piss the owner off just to cause him to go home and beat the dog out of frustration.
I don't think though that inflicting physical violence on another person is justified because they don't have restraint with their dogs. This turns into a type of hypocrisy where your intolerance to violence justifies your own violence to someone else. I understand how it's easier said than done though.
My dog also is very strong willed and stubborn. He also whimpers and screams whether I do or don't touch him. This can be after he looks right at me while he knowingly breaks a rule to see if I'll respond or ignore it.

We have dog parks here in Oregon also. We're just required to leash dogs on the way to and from the enclosure. Most of the time the patrons are really social minded and their dogs' behavior reflects this. We do have dogs though that aren't monitored enough by their owners and I've grabbed a dog or two by their neck skin for correction. I have a pit also, and he's so well mannered because I work really hard to make sure he minds. If another dog is being overly aggressive with him, my dog can handle it. BUT, since my dog gets the PITBULL label, I'm afraid he's likely to feel the brunt of the wrath in a legal situation. This means he loses either way, so I regulate if another owner is too lazy to monitor their dog's manners.

Id definetly have said something to him. That shit should not be tolerated.

hmmm so your standards of treatment are better?? and or you feel that your standards of treatment should be followed otherwise the person is wrong.
I'd have to assume that all of your standards are right and unless everyone else agrees with you they are wrong and that's that.??
Point being one person's abuse is another person's training techniques.. ever break a horse so it can be rode?? not a pleasant thing..
Point again, what standards or who's do we follow that is acceptable.?? yours??
just making a point.., same logic can be applied to many situations..The answer to your every question

Sad thing is my Dobe listens better than my ole lady does.

I see everyone's points here.
On the one hand, I should have given the guy a piece of my mind and no one should treat an animal like that.
On the other, how do I know how he's training his dog? Maybe a light pinch is enough to make the dog cry. I have a dobie with her ears cropped and one day some woman started lecturing me about it. I thought what the **** do you know about me and my dog?
I had a split second decision to make and I decided a dirty look was enough.
Maybe I'll react differently next time. (I'm also one of those guys who's not very good at nicely telling someone something. I tend to flip out.)

I would have to see the situation first to make my own decision....
You do have to be physical with animals in order for them to become trained... someone mentioned the dog whisper... I have watched a couple of his episodes and he actually does kick the dogs if they are real jumpy and won't settle down.... he doesn't do it like you would think though....
I had to be physical with my pitbull in order for him to be trained the way i wanted.... now there are no problems unless of course i have red meat out and there are strangers around then its a different story

I won't lay a hand on my dog.
If she does something wrong I just talk to her in a stern voice and she gets it.
But I'm also lucky enough to have a really well behaved dog.
-
03-17-2009, 01:49 PM #35
^^^ Yeah it does depend on the dog, breed etc.... Parents have a dog and we never had to lay a hand on him... he learned with a stern voice and treats
my pitbull thought he was like fukkin Genghis Khan or some shit.... would destroy everything... rip pillows apart, chew through his steel cage, break doors in half, jump out two story windows, all kinds of crazy shit... just crazy

Yeah my Dobe is cropped and docked. I have had people say things about the ears. Im just like its not your dog so go on. He's my boy you mess with me you got him to deal with.
I had the training done mainly cause my ole lady is like a whopping 100 lbs and scared to death and we had a break in once. When we first got the place. So we got the Dobe trained.
Had a break in again while I working out one day and she was there. And she let him have it. He held dude on the ground until cops got there. I rushed home and when I got there cops where pulling dude out of the house. ****ing bloody mess is all I can say. His face, his arms and legs you name it he had bites everywhere. Took 3 garbage bags alot of paper towels and of course I wore gloves to clean that mess up. He got charged with aggravated burglary, breaking and entering and something else. Went to court as well and he's all scared up face is really bad and so are his arms. Funny as hell though price he has to pay for it though. Bad neighborhood just to let everyone know.

Yea he sure is. She said she kept making him stop and if guy tried to get up she sent him after the guy again. I was proud of her and my big boy.. ***ker deserved it. Im certain the he would be dead if she wouldnt have kept calling him off. She didnt want the him to kill the guy. I was like babe you wouldnt of got in trouble or would the dog. Know she's like **** I should of just let him kill the guy. I was like yeah but oh well he's got 15 years in prison and scars to live with for the rest of his life.
Oh yeah and every since that happened normally in the area we live people are always walking by the house, drugs deals whatever. But not no more people stay clear and when im outside with him on the front of the house and or neighbors are outside they run inside. Its kinda funny. He's all command though, unless he's getting beat by something. Or were not home and someone is there. He guards well. Would'nt hurt a fly sweetest dog in the world. And so smart. And he gets the TV remote for me too.. LOL> long sory. But he does..Last edited by subaruwrx04; 03-17-2009 at 04:22 PM.
