Spelling Nazi
Okay, I understand that occasionally a word's going to get misspelled.
No big deal.
But how is it possible that there are so many (presumably) adult males on this board who can't spell at all??
Wednesday / Wendsday
Tomorrow / Tommorrow
Blatant / Blatent
These kinds of misspellings I can understand.
Weighed / Wade
Purchase / Purches
Curtain / Curtent
Enough / Anuff
Issue / Ishue
Towards / Tords
Trying / Trieing
^^^All taken from this site.
Have you never SEEN what words look like before? Never read a book, magazine, anything? I honestly can't understand how it's possible for an adult in this country to be so bad at spelling. How are there people on here who claim to possess or at least seek knowledge in drug and body chemistry, but spell below a 3rd grade level?
I ain't no collige gradgywit or nothin meself... but damn.

i have some kind of compulsive thing that when i see somebody mispell or even use the wrong spelling of a word for the sentence they are using...it really bugs me and i want to be able to edit it.
like when people say "there going to the store" it should be "THEY'RE going to the store"
and stuff like thatLast edited by Skully44420; 04-02-2009 at 12:21 AM. Reason: damn you wolfcraft LOL

I think we should keep in mind that many of our members do not speak English as their native language. That being said, it's the sub-teenage text lingo that gets to me:
"I wnt to get big, is dere sumptin dat I can take so's to be huge lolz?"
umm...no.
next?

The problem isn't the non-English-speakers.
Those guys actually put an effort into spelling... Furthermore, they tend to apologize for their poor English.
The other guys don't seem to give a rat's ass.
Threads like this one pop up at least once a year... the general response being "who gives a rat's ass how I spell on the internet?"

You know... I don't understand how someone can possibly type less than 85 wpm. I mean never take a typing class, anything? How are there people on here who claim to possess or atleast seek knowledge in drug and body chemistry, but type like a 3rd grader?
See... that is perspective for ya. You place importants on spelling and some of us just type as fast as we can because we are working or doing other things and it just isn't as important to spell right as it is to get it out and over as quick as we can so we can get back to work.
So

Im happy if people spell 90% or more correctly...it is somewhat irritating if every other word is wrong.

I don't know, call me crazy, but when I read... I like the words to at least slightly resemble the words they are supposed to be.
Shit, be happy I'm not mentioning punctuation. That's virtually non-existent on this board.

Well, in the Steroid and Grammar forum (note the more inclusive change Big) every word will be spelled correctly, every first word will be capitalized, (as well as the pronoun "I") and every sentence will stay in the same tense throughout. Everyone will be happy and kind, with a smile on their faces the whole day through

I have slight dyslexia (yes I used an online dictionary to make sure I spelled that right )but I do always re-read before I post and try to make sure what I post is at least slightly legible.I do miss the odd apostrophe but nobody is perfect.

I honestly think spelling is all about genetics, or a good deal genetics.
When I was young 2 of my older brothers always use to ask me how to spell words, and they were smart but they just couldn't spell for shit.
I still notice it today even after they've gotten through college they still double check with me on words I think should be more than simple enough for a 5 year old to spell.
So yeh, I really think some people just suck at it and can't help it but it means nothing about how intelligent they are.
I have weaknesses in other areas like even today at 26 I KNOW the difference between then & than yet I persistently am always mixing them up. I know ones for time and ones for comparisons but for some reason that single letter "a" or "e" doesn't link in my head.
And if I notice it now I get mad as shit because I know how simple it is but I still fvck it up.Last edited by Bojangles69; 04-02-2009 at 11:01 PM.

Yes spelling is about genetics.
And if you don't have the genes to be a good speller, you shouldn't think about trying spell check until you're over 21 and have your body fat under 15%.

Being a linguist, it's sometimes a bit sad to see "native speakers" butcher the English language so badly, not only with poor spelling, but also poor syntax and lexis.
Most common examples on this board:
they're/their/there
you're/your
than/then
loose/lose
effect/affect
But it all pales in comparison to "Engrish."

Yes CSAR, I agree. But just remember, in AR it's not who you know, it's whom you know.
