I have ptsd - which obviously involves quite a bit of anxiety.

When I got back I had to force myself into situations that made me uncomfortable - it sucked but in time I became more 'used-to' the situations and it became easier. Talking to someone your comfortable with usually helps - I mean a Dr. not family or friends.

I take an SNRI called Effexor for Depression/Anxiety. It works great for me.
Although I was against taking an RX at first, it has been worth the trade off. My standard of living is alot more comfortable.

    Good luck to you.

Yes. Venlafaxine is the generic name for Effexor (brand name). It's the same thing, and the generic is actually what I'm taking since it's a lot cheaper.

The SNRI is a newer generation of antidepressant/antianxiety that was started with SSRI's (Selective Seratonin Reuptake Inhibitors). This newer medicine now also affects the Noripinepherine reuptake also.

I do,...and it sucks. There are times I have panic attacks at the gym and have to run into the locker room to calm down. I've tried many meds, but you become dependent on them and the problem gets worse when your off them. I'm a living example. I've been off of Effexor for one year and still have side effects from the drug. WITHDRAWAL FROM EFFEXOR IS A NIGHTMARE. I had to taper down dosage over 2 months and it still was a horror story. I HATE SSRI's. Fight thru it man. Its hard, but your not the only one. Do some research on the internet about how to control this disorder without meds. Gear can make it worse. Stay away from stimulants such as coffee, N.O. Xplode (supplement), etc....they can set you off. Goodluck man.....

I HAVE to follow a hunter gatherer's style diet or I flip out on a regular basis. More anxiety/anger. I can't eat gluten or dairy or any sugars or I get crazy. I am not on any meds, however, I've been debating on trying out a mood elevator/stabilizer of some sort. You're not alone.

I first started taking medication for depression and anxiety 8yrs ago, and it really helped. I was on it for 5 yrs before i actually felt like i could come off it. Other than meds, all i can recommend is perhaps a psychologist/psychiatrist/councellor to help you deal with it.

    Good luck bro, and welcome.

i too suffer from anxiety/depression. my dr placed me on a ssri (lexapro) as well as xanax for really bad days. lexapro has helped tremendously. when i have really bad days the xanax does help but i'm scared of benzo's as they can be habit forming...the last thing i need is to become addicted. hang in there buddy!

I suffered from severe anxiety and panic attacks when my wife left me. I have never experienced anything so scarey before in my life and I don't think I could handle going through that twice.

Try some depression/anxiety forums. Visiting those forums and sharing your problems really helped me out a ton.

On topic of anxiety forums you CAN learn a lot, but I notice a very contagious self defeatest attitude that always made me more anxious just visiting those kinds of forums.

Anxiety obviously can be biological and psychological. And when you start reading story after story and how vivid some people describe their problems, it WILL make you feel more anxious just reading it.
And I noticed it was actually increasing my overall anxiety.

Part of dealing with anxiety is finding a med that works for you. (for people who have been diagnosed by professionals and just know they have a disorder)
I believe 100% in inderal not just for physical manifestations of anxiety, but also psychological.

Its crazy cause you REALLY need to sometimes not listen to doctors.
Doctors always use to tell me "xanax effects your mind, inderal doesn't, which is why inderal won't help your anxiety". BULL FVCKING SHIT.

Inderal is responsible for more positive and profound changes in the way I think then any other med out there. And doctors will tell you it doesn't effect your mind. Let me ask you something.
If you usually shake when you get anxious, and the shaking itself makes you more anxious, and inderal completely stops the shakes, how is that not making you less anxious?

Which is another reason I want to do therapy, I just see too many patients in this field who really seem uninformed by their doctors. I remember first time I went to see a psychiatrist and it was like boom try paxil. He didn't even take a minute to help me understand my condition.
I was going there for answers and yeh maybe a med too. But so often is just about the med.
I just want people to realize when you have an anxiety problem you do not act casual about it. You learn everything there is to know, you talk to specialists, you admit yourself to a psychward if need be (which is actually where I got most of my help).

But you just need to be relentless and persistant. Try new things but give everything you try its fairshot. A LOT of people overcome these problems, the ones who don't are usually just the ones who stop fighting it.
And it will also help shitloads if you find groups in your area.

There are panic disorder groups, ptsd groups, social anxiety disorder groups, it really helps you see how normal you really are. And with a lot of anxiety suffers, the feeling of not being like everyone else causes so much anxiety by itself. "People don't understand me, noone gets it.. etc". Everyone experiences anxiety. Not everyone experiences to the high degree where it becomes a disorder. But you do also need to realize what forms of anxiety are normal and natural. People who suffer from anxiety tend to project ALL FORMS of anxiety as a negative experience.

Like classes start for me tommorow and I'm pretty anxious right now, but I wouldn't say its something "unnatural". In the past it use to feel like that but now I know "ok if I feel anxious when I wake up, I'll pop a few inderal and work out". Thats how I maintain my anxiety. In the past I didnt have inderal, and the workouts didn't stop the panic attacks alone. But it REALLY IS that easy to find a solution.

I went for about 6 years with this shit before I even heard of the med that would wind up working for me.
And whats best is I only take it as needed. Its not a lifetime sentence which I thought it would be. Just knowing I have a med that works, has had a MASSIVE IMPACT on the disorder itself. So big that I can face a lot of things today w/out it, that I couldn't face in the past on things like xanax and klonopin which are so fvckn overprescribed.

I tried several antidepressants also, including Lexapro. Lexapro helped me alot, but wasn't as effective as Effexor.

You'll find that for some, SSRI's were a nightmare. For others, they improved their standard of living. Each medication is different and affects people differently with varying side effects.

If you go that route (depends on what you decide is best for you) keep in mind that it's a trial and error process. It takes a couple of weeks for the RX to kick in and take maximum effect. Then, if it has negative side effects, it takes a couple more weeks for them to wear off.

If you take this path, try to be patient and try a few different types and take notes or keep a journal.

The sides I get from effexor (withdrawals if I don't take it daily, and in the past, nausea (sp?) after taking it) was well worth the peace of mind and focus ability it gave me.

You'll have to decide if the experimental process is worth it for you.

I hope you do find a solution, bud.

Great point! For some, it's a temporary phase to go on medication and they can go off of it eventually. I choose to stay on mine.

Counselling is also key. That's how I ended up on SSRI's. I also overcame my alcohol addiction and worked on spirituality and relationship skills. All of these are tied in to how you function in life.

I hate paxil but I really shouldn't trash the med cause it DID technically do something when I was on it.

It made me happy and careless.
The problem is I went on it for anxiety, and it didn't do anything for anxiety, it felt more like it worked for depression then anxiety, but I never felt depressed to begin.

After 1 1/2 years the sides from Paxil really started to show their face. I was doing extremely stupid things, like wearing flip flops to work and getting written up among many other weird random things like that.

Plus I also put on a lot of weight on it.

So to sum up it made me happy.
It didn't do anything for anxiety.
And it made me extremely forgetful and fat.

Also because paxil is a bit older of an ssri it tends to have more side effects then something like Lexapro. Its really not a bad med I just would never take it again after seeing what Lex does in comparison for anxiety disorders.

Millions of people suffer from anxiety/panic attacks. Probably 75% of this forum has some underlying condition of anxiety, me being one of them.

Try counseling. If that doesn't help, try going to populated malls, bars and restaurants alone to get used to being around people in social situations. You can also try taking a public speaking class.

If THAT doesn't help, try getting a script for a light dosage of lorazepam--it's a mild anti-anxiety medication. It's weak compared to the other scheduled benzodiazepines but getting a script for more powerful benzos right off the bat is a bad move--they'll effectively treat your anxiety but knock you the f*ck out if you've never used them before.

Anti-anxiety meds are different from anti-depressant meds. But yes, I've taken these kinds of meds while on a cycle.

i used to have bad anxiety and panic attacks , the last med i had taken was ,and its a non narcotic but worked for me was trazodone . i finally worked through it . i know exactly how scared and stuff you feel. just stay strong . AAS or put it simple steroids have a tendency to bring it back, i keep ativan and xanax handy whenever needed, got to refill trazodone script. when it comes back i try to power through it before meds, makes you stronger against the shvt. just so you know nobody has ever died from a panic or anxiety attack no matter how severe it is , so keep that in mind . i have had really bad ones where i thought i couldnt get enough air and shvt and i made it through with no meds , it took a few hours or so sometimes half the day but i made it,
