fighting in the gym?
have you guys ever had, or seen a fight in the gym?
The other day this one guy brought his +- 10 year old kid to the gym and was making him lift very heavy weights. This other guy started saying "that makes me very cross.. you shouldn't be doing that to your son. the next thing they got into a huge argument and a fight broke out. the personal trainers had to pull them apart was pretty hectic! I felt sorry for the kid.

I have and seen a few times playing basketball where I or someone else had to body slam someone because they kept talking shit in our pickup games. On of the guys was on my team, I told him to calm down he turned and went after me. Its nice the bball players are so tall and skinny because they are easy to get to the ground. If you dont play pickup ball then you dont know how rough and physical it can get. For some of those guys out there it is the only thing they have got in there otherwise meaningless life.

Nope. Never have. I saw some Russian guy stab someone with a screwdriver in high school though. Those Russians gangs were vicious. Totally unrelated but still crazy.

I don't fight in the gym. I wait outside for the newbies to finish then i beat them up and take their wallets.

Nobody won really because it was pulled apart very quickly. But the guy with the son would have won because he was a huge mother F****
The other guy was a thin accountant type guy lol. Iv'e actually seen him on one of our news channels before talking about the markets and stuff.. a real nerd

If I have a son, and he wants to go lift with dad when he's 10 years old, I'll bring him without hesitation.
If someone starts blabbing in my ear about how I'm a bad dad, and they thing they are some type of doctor or someone other than a local meat head qualified to tell me I'm wrong for doing so, then I'd probably tell them to shut the **** up too. If they say it back, i can certainly see how a fight could break out.
I started lifting in 5th grade (about the same time I started jerking off), just in my basement, but I did it every night. I did not know wtf I was doing, but I would have loved it if I had a dad to guide me.

Most football teams in Jr High are tackle and most have a weight room regime they follow, generally upper body then lower body a few times a week.
They even track "bench/squat" and give them classes "400club/500club" and give them t-shirts for it.
These are 11 and 12 year olds who start, who have been playing pee wee tackle football since 7 or 8 years old.
A lot of parents would say a 10 year old in Motocross is bad too, but it's really common in a lot of area's and probably more dangerous than some muscle stimulation.
Most 10 year old boys are playing WoW after school, or Xbox live stuffing away pizza rolls and chugging Mt Dew in the process. Most young ladies are busy watching reality T.V. and eating Celery Sticks for lunch every day.
If a 10 year old is interested in lifting, I can certainly see why a parent would be relived that he's taking interest in something that is active and will build his confidence as opposed to having a level 70 warlock in WoW.

stupid point man.
junior high do u mean middle school? grades 6-8?
if u show me one middle school who offers a 400-500 club i will shut my mouth, that is for high school not middle and esp not a 10 year old.
again, if u are training ur 10 year old to lift 400-500 at that age, u are a disgrace for a father...and if someone brings that to my gym, forcing him to lift the heavy weights, i will smack the shit out him myself.

I have a friend i workout with on occasions who brings his son as father son time every once in a while. But he certainly DOES NOT let his son workout with us. The kid will jump rope, do some crunches and some pushups but thats it.

If a kid wants to VOLUNTARILY lift weights at 10 years old..... I would show him the proper movements and not let him go heavy. I see nothing wrong with letting him go light and perfect his form for when he gets older.
Forcing a kid to lift weights however is not OK.....
In HS we had an 900,1000,1100,1200 club..... never had a weight room in 6,7,8th grade.

where do you live J Dogg? because out here where I live in CA. there are no weights for kids to lift in middle school let alone some club for lifting the heaviest. I know in high school theres a weight room and a club though, maybe you meant to say high school?
I think kids atleast those that were in my age range stayed in great shape from just playing sports outside, we did it all. Baseball, football, basketball, road bikes, just whatever, I didnt know one kid who lifted on a normal base untill high school.

I live in MI, in the mid west and the south football is big big big.
We have a really nice weight room in our JR High and have since I was in school, I'm 29 now. We put out all state soccer and football teams almost every year.
Lifting a few times a week in Jr High IMO is not going to affect your growth plates. Everyone gets in a panic about it, but there are probably very few actual studies on it, just like AS.
Like I said, I've been lifting since I was in 5th grade, I started using 8-12 reps till failure in Jr High. I am 6' with 5'10" parents and I have no deformities except a set of long ass monkey arms.

Here in the midwest we say junior high. Grades 6-8. We had an 8th grade lift-a-thon. We started lifting in gym class in 7th grade, as well as for football.
I see no problem starting to lift around 13 years old. I did and I am 6'4" with a 5'1" mom and a 6'1" dad. I agree that those who get interested in physical fitness at an early age will most likely continue it as they get older and not become fat slobs. If my 10 year old wanted to come to the gym with me I'd have him doing dips, pullups, pushups, sprints, mostly bodyweight exercises. I agree that trying to get your 10 year old to bench 200lbs is over the top.

if you want to come out to western michigan, I'll take you up and introduce you to coach kirby who runs the program, nice guy, I still visit him a few times a year and have helped a few years with some of the students.
It's a 400 and 500lb club consisting of your bench + Squat. 500 club....bench 185 for max and squat 315 for max. Is that unbelievable or what for a 8th grader?
Or benching 135 and squatting 275 in 6 or 7th grade?
In 6th grade, most students start out at 11 and turn 12 at some point during the year. Some are even 10 years old in 6th grade (if you graduate at 17) and turn 11.

I agree totally .
Doesn't keep me from feeling sorry for kid though .
When taking my son to boxing center . A dad brought his 11 year old son in . Stating his toughness and that his friend , professional kick boxer had been training him . Challenged a 12 year old a few rounds fully geared . The father and kick boxing tough guy did nothing but yell at the poor kid telling him to fight as he got pounded . The kid left crying .
That's the only time I have seen a father initiate a fight with a bigger kid and be disappointed .

I would never make my child lift anything. That being said. My 6 year old goes to the gym with me almost every Sunday. Why? Because she wants to. She likes to hang out and see what her daddy does. She runs laps, uses the treadmill, etc. We go on Sundays so we dont get in the way of others. Does that make me a bad Father?

When I was a trainer one of my clients would bring his son with him (7 yrs) and make the kid work out. His father was a mook and couldn't stick to his program, he always had answers for every question he asked...which makes me wonder why he bothered asking in the first place and furthermore why he bothered hiring a trainer. Anyhow, his kid was always there, severely underweight and the guy was always making him lift. I always bit my tongue though because it's not really my place to tell him anything and I doubt it would've made a difference anyway.
I did however poke fun at the father for his own short-comings and reluctance to accept them, or do anything to change them.
